Here in Canada we are not meeting even the most minimum standards that the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples sets out. The current situation in Nova Scotia is embarrassing, unjust, and inhuman. We must do better. Indigenous peoples globally continue to face dispossession of their lands and resources, discrimination, forced assimilation and other grave human rights abuses. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples1 is the most compr...ehensive international human rights instrument to specifically address their economic, social, cultural, political, civil, spiritual and environmental rights. In its own words, the Declaration sets out minimum standards necessary for the dignity, survival and well-being of Indigenous peoples.
