Change and Starting Over Grieving changes some people in profound ways, and sometimes the grief journey can give birth to a new life. Following the loss of someone close, sometimes those who grieve no longer find joy in certain activities they used to do. Things once loved include participating in activities that were once shared with the beloved; doing those things without them can be challenging because strong emotions surface and little or no joy is experienced. This i...s especially noticeable in the early part of the grief journey. In the early part of grief, the attachment that the griever has to the deceased will make it challenging to think of life and engaging in life again without their beloved. As the griever begins to process the loss and accept the finality of the loss they will begin to find periods of reprieve, which will provide the space for them to engage in life again. Some suggestions to introduce small changes in one’s life are: Keep a journal and write down your thoughts and emotions. This can help you detect when even the smallest of shifts are happening. Get outside. Spending time in nature is another way to create a shift. Studies have shown that even viewing pictures of nature can be helpful tool to shift away from negative thoughts. Park judgement and timelines at the door and be self-compassionate. Accepting that grief brings emotional ups and downs will help you understand that you need to show compassion to yourself when you’re having a down day. The thing to remember when grieving is that emotions are always changing and shifting. This is the natural evolution of grief and learning to accept change. Viewing ups and downs that happen as natural shifts can help us better understand what we are experiencing. By opening our minds, we become better able to forge ahead into a new chapter of our life. This acceptance helps to make the grief journey easier and more manageable. When the griever experiences changes that are positive it can help to foster healing and growth. In this fresh experience, the griever will be open to new beginnings and accept their new reality more readily. The ability to experience something new in a positive way can provide the griever with a sense of hope that there is a life possible without their beloved. Margaret Lorrie Beaton, MA, C. Just Breathe Sometimes individuals experience stress and anxiety when grieving. This can lead to a variety of symptoms including rapid breathing, sweating, fatigue, increased heart rate and difficulty concentrating. Fear and worrying can dominate personal thought patterns and the physical ailments can follow including the feeling one is going to faint. Firstly take a moment to compose yourself. It’s about redirecting your focus from panic to a state of calmness. Sit or lie ...down in a comfortable position. Elongate your back and begin to slow your rate of breathing. If comfortable close your eyes and focus on your surroundings. Listen to the sounds around you. Feel your feet on the floor and your hands beside you. Focus on your breath as you inhale and exhale. Try to breathe deeply from the abdomen. Notice your chest and belly expanding and contracting. Focus on the here and now, focus on your body as air enters and exits your lungs. Find a place of relaxation and calm. Continue to just breathe until you become comfortable. If you continue to have anxiety over time consult your physician. They will assess if you need additional support with this condition. Fundy Funeral Home/CFHC Online

Carving a Name I wrote my name upon the sand, And trusted it would stand for aye; But, soon, alas! the refluent sea... Had washed my feeble lines away. I carved my name upon the wood, And, after years, returned again; I missed the shadow of the tree That stretched of old upon the plain. To solid marble next, my name I gave as a perpetual trust; An earthquake rent it to its base, And now it lies, o'erlaid with dust. All these have failed. In wiser mood I turn and ask myself, "What then?" If I would have my name endure, I'll write it on the hearts of men, In characters of living light, Of kindly deeds and actions wrought. And these, beyond the touch of time, Shall live immortal as my thought. By Horatio Alger, Jr. January 13, 1832 - July 18, 1899

Remembrance Day Observance Today we stand shoulder to shoulder with Canadians across our nation and honour those who have fallen in war and conflicts around the world. They fought for our freedoms and helped to pave the way for the liberties and opportunities we enjoy. Thank you for your service. As we pause in silence in your memory, our hearts go out to all families who are affected by the loss of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Minimizing What my Family has to Take Care of Surviving family members must tend to many matters when a spouse, parent, sibling or child dies. This is a difficult time, and regrettably these responsibilities require immediate action, regardless of the emotional state of surviving family members. This is one of the reasons, planning in advance makes so much sense. Many decisions can be made beforehand, and subsequently, next of kin no longer needs to start from scratch when t...ending to the tasks that are associated with the passing of a loved one. Many checklists indicate that between 50 and 100 responsibilities, tasks and decisions need to be made. Sometimes not all survivors agree on a course of action and this can lead to conflict at what already is an emotional time. Lessen the burden on your family. We can help. Please contact us if you wish information on what decisions you can make today. Fundy Funeral Home/CFHC Online
