Tonight (Sept 22) across Canada, people who work in the live events industry are glowing red. My home included. The live events industry employs thousands of specialized workers. Myself, I perform onstage as a variety artist, plus I work backstage as a sound and lighting technician.... Plus there are directors, producers, ticket takers, ushers, video technicians, cameramen, designers, prop makers, logistics coordinators, and hunderds of other specialized positions to make a live event happen. If you have ever been to a festival, a concert, a play, a convention, a tradeshow, a seminar or even a movie, you've enjoyed the fruits of our labour. Our industry was the first to close, and will be the last to reopen due to pandemic measures. There are thousands of people in Calgary alone who have trained for years to do a job that is difficult, and requires long hours, often in the middle of the night. They love doing their work, so you can enjoy a festival, or a show with your favorite band. Help us get back to work. Wear a mask Wash your hands Keep 6 feet apart. A huge shout out to The Clark County Fair! Not only did they bring my show to Ridgefield Washington for ten days of fun, but they also supported one of my favourite causes. Wow. I did the opening keynote performance at a youth event today in a farming community in eastern Alberta. I juggled, made people laugh, had fun, and slipped in a message about setting goals to succeed. The closing speaker was astounding. CHRIS Koch, a man who was born with no arms, and no legs. He rides a skateboard to get around, and he rocks it. Nothing slows him down. His message was simple - if I can do it - so can you. I had to run to another event, so I only caught p...art of his presentation. Later this evening, in downtown Calgary, who should I see, clipping along on his skateboard? Chris Koch. (he's kind of hard to miss) Chatted for a while. Incredibly inspiring guy.
