With Spring on the horizon, tick medications are recommended for your dogs and for outdoor kitties! Tick meds are normally started in April or May, depending when it warms up (over 4 degrees Celsius) and are continued until freeze up (usually October or November). Common tick species in Saskatchewan include American dog ticks, winter ticks, and wood ticks. The tick responsible for the transmission of Lyme disease, the black-legged tick, is found in very low numbers in Saskat...chewan and is not a major concern (less than 10 individuals are reported yearly)! As these medications are prescriptions, we must have seen your pet within the last 12 months for an exam in order to legally dispense them! Please phone ahead to order your medication in order to have updated information on your pets. We are still doing curbside care, so please give us a call once you have arrived at 306-934-8387. Oral versus Topical options: Some tick medications can be given by mouth and are normally given once a month. Other oil-based products must be applied to the skin at the base of the neck and are normally given every one to two months depending on the brand. Ticks must bite in order to ingest some of the medication but very rapidly die and fall off. If you are interested in medication to repel ticks (dogs only) please let us know as Advantix is the only current medication that does this. Note that Advantix cannot be used around cats! Products we carry include: Dogs: Nexgard (fleas and ticks) or Nexgard Spectra (fleas, ticks, internal parasites) an oral chew given once monthly Doramectin (fleas, ticks, internal parasites) a topical oil applied once monthly Advantix (fleas, ticks) a topical oil applied once monthly Cats: Bravecto (fleas and ticks) a topical oil applied every 2 months

With the upcoming winter storm brewing this weekend we want to remind all our valued clients to get your food requests and medication refills in early! We are open until 6 pm today and plan to be open 9 am - 4 pm Saturday, weather dependent.
