Before you fire up that lawnmower , please check your yard for baby bunnies. We have already started to receive calls for baby bunnies who are reported to be ab...andoned, injured or inconveniently located. We wish to remind residents that Animal Services does NOT relocate healthy wildlife and this time of year wildlife rehabilitators are overwhelmed with animals in need of care so it is important to leave healthy, undisturbed baby bunnies in their nests where mom will take proper care of them. Baby cotton tails have the best chance of survival with mom so it is important to avoid interfering with nests unless the babies have been injured, the nest is destroyed or mom has been injured or chased away. Wildlife rehabilitators care for sick, injured and orphaned animals only so if you are unsure please reach out to a licensed rehabber before removing any babies. Here are some helpful tips for wild baby bunnies: -Female cotton tails often choose to nest in backyards which may not seem like the smartest idea especially if there are dogs living at the address. However, some believe that mother rabbits choose these locations because predators such as raccoons, cats or skunks are less likely to enter the yards where dogs reside. -Mother rabbits don’t want to attract the attention of predators so they hide babies and leave them on their own for most of the day. -mom will return to feed the babies usually between dusk/dawn which takes only a few minutes so unless you monitor the location 24/7, you may not realize she has been back to feed. -Nests are made by digging a shallow bowl type area into the ground which mom will line with grass, leaves and fur from her body. Once inside, babies are covered with grass to camouflage them from predators. -If you discover a nest that has been disturbed but the babies are not injured, you can tuck babies back in and try to recreate the nest to the best of your ability in the same spot. -Do not move/relocate the nest as this may cause mom to abandon the babies, rabbits are one of the only mammals who cannot pick up her young to move them so she will return to the same location to care for them. -Babies will be leaving the nest around 3 weeks old so please keep dogs/cats and kids away from the area as much as possible to allow them time to leave. In spite of your best efforts accidents happen, maybe you accidentally dug up the nest, uncovered it, or ran over it with a lawnmower. If you find a baby in need of assistance including: -There are obvious wounds or blood on its body -It has had contact with a cat/dog -It is lying on its side and cannot right itself To report an injured animal please contact us at (905) 574-3433 ext 1 and an officer shall be dispatched to assist.
