Fynntastic Grooming 25.10.2020

It’s been an exhausting week. I’ve fought with myself on wether or not to share what happened to my dog Navy. But at the end of the day I can’t fathom the thoug...ht of this happening to another family and their dog. I know in my gut that what happened to Navy was no accident. I want to be clear on my intention with this post. I NEED people to know what happened so that this never happens to anyone else ever again. We adopted Navy through a rescue in April. She is a sweet, gentle, loving dog and she’s great with people. But we found that she isn’t well adjusted to other dogs. I knew we needed to get some help from a professional. I had heard AMAZING things about Monika from rainbow dog training inc. So I did the responsible pet owner thing and contacted her to hopefully get some help for our little Moo moo! (We call her that because she has spots like a cow) On October 19th I had an arrangement to bring Navy out to Monika’s home. After filling out her questionnaire and talking to her a few times on the phone, her recommendation was that Navy should spend a night with her for an assessment. She had assured me multiple times that she had over 25 years experience with dogs even after I was EXTREMELY clear about the issues my dog had. I was concerned because she wanted to bring my dog into her home where she also has dogs. She never once had any concerns and at the time she had made me feel very confident in the decision to choose her. When I dropped Navy off, we chatted for a few minutes, she said she would send me some videos of Navy, and we made arrangements that she would drop Navy off at my house the next day between 4-5. I received a call from Monika on Tuesday October 20th at 1pm, where she had told me my dog was prey driven, to which I asked what that meant and is it possible to correct it. She continued to ask me questions about Navy’s history. I explained I didn’t know much because she was a rescue but that I would contact the rescue to see what else I could find out. Monika then asked if it was possible for her to keep Navy for an extra night just to assess her a little longer. At the time I saw no issue with it. I then received a text at 11:30 on Wednesday October 21 asking if I could meet her in Nisku at the flying J at 5 pm. When I got out of my truck Monika explained that she was full of adrenaline because prior to leaving her house, my dog, according to her, had chewed through a plastic kennel and a wall divider in the 5 minutes she had left her house and had attacked her dog. My immediate response was oh my god is your dog okay!! To which she confidently said oh yes he’s totally fine I’m not worried about that at all. She then proceeded to unlock her doors to let Navy out of her kennel. As soon as Navy jumped out we started to walk toward our suv and I immediately noticed that her back legs had very little function. It looked as though she had no control over them, she was stumbling and wobbling all over the place. I also noticed that Navy was covered in urine. From her back end and legs all the way up to her head. I looked at Monika with a very concerned look on my face and said what happened, what’s going on with her legs?? To which she said yeah I was going to ask you if you’ve ever had issues with her back legs? I responded quite shocked with no not AT ALL, she is so strong and has never had any issues whatsoever. Monika then picked up her phone and called someone. I assume it was maybe a vet she knew but I can’t confirm who she was talking to because I was sitting in my suv with Navy and she walked around to her car. She got off the phone and said it could either be adrenaline from the dog altercation, or that it could be something neurological. I said okay what do I do? I’m not really sure what happened and I’m very worried. She told me to keep an eye on her and if it doesn’t get better soon to take her to pulse veterinarian clinic. She said she would call me later to see how she was doing and to give me her assessment on Navy. We parted ways and I drove home with my dog who I could tell was under stress and obviously not okay. We live on the 3rd floor of an apartment. I had to carry her up 3 flights of stairs because she couldn’t walk. As soon as we got in she immediately went to her water dish that was full. She didn’t stop drinking until it was empty. I decided to give her a bath because she was still covered in urine and I wanted to make sure any wounds she had from the dog altercation were clean. There were no open wounds, in fact they were all scabbed over. while I was bathing her she did not stop drinking the bath water. That is something she never does. After I got her out of the tub she started peeing blood all over the floor. I was already sure I had to take her in but this confirmed my decision. As Monika suggested I took her to pulse vet clinic in Sherwood park. I spent a total of 5 hours sitting in my truck outside the clinic. (Covid protocol) the vet explained to me that she had an obvious injury to her spine and asked me what had happened. I explained to her the same thing Monika told me. To which the vet seemed very confused. She said that the injury my dog sustained didn’t match that of a dog altercation. She had questioned why there were no bite marks on my dog. She explained to me my options for treatment and was very thorough. It was about 12am, I had my kids at home and my decision was to take Navy home with the medication they had given me and I would re asses in the morning for possible xrays, ct scans, blood work and ultrasounds. Once I got home to take a better look at Navy I began to see a lot of what looked like sores and scabs all over her body. One under her armpit, one on each of her front paws, some down the back of her front leg, and some on her neck. At first I thought these marks were from the dog altercation but upon further inspection, as I noticed when she was in the bath, they we already scabbed over. They were not wounds from a recent dog altercation. And they didn’t look as though they were bite marks. They looked more like burn marks or sores. The next morning I woke up to a text from Monika. I haven’t slept, any info. I explained to her what the vet said and told her the issues Navy had. (Blood in urine, excessive water drinking etc) I asked her to explain what happened in either a text or voice note so I could take that right to the vet as I didn’t want to miss understand anything or explain it wrong. As soon as I asked for that Monika’s demeanour changed. She began calling me over and over, (I couldn’t answer as I was at work) she sent me voice notes saying it was my fucking dog that got hurt not yours. And just kept explaining that my dog had chewed through the kennel(this time her story changed to 45 minutes instead of 5) and bit her dog and that was it. When I was able to answer Monika’s call it was about 12 minutes long. The only thing she kept repeating was I didn’t do anything wrong and your dog chewed through my kennel and my dog was bleeding. Other then that I couldn’t get much else out of her. I explained all the marks on my dog, what the vet said, and what I had noticed since my dog returned home. I did ask for her to pay for the vet bill. I explained that my dog was in her care and that I felt it was the right thing to do. She never agreed to pay the vet bill until the end of the conversation. I said thank you and she hung up on me. Since then I haven’t been able to get payment for the vet bill and not once has Monika asked how my dog is doing nor will she respond. It’s not top priority for me right now but I also never received an assessment for my dog. I still don’t know why she reacts to other dogs or how to correct it. I wish I had gotten more video of when I first picked her up and how she looked. But at the time I thought it was just a dog altercation. If I had known this was going to be dog abuse I would have started documenting right away. Although I don’t believe this should have happened in the hands of a dog trainer with 25 years experience, I do understand that sometimes things happen. If I thought even for a second that this was from a dog altercation I would not be posting this right now. But when I started explaining what happened to my dog to a few friends, I learned that this is not the first time Monika has been neglectful and abusive with dogs. I spoke to a very kind woman name Trish, who’s dog spent 10 days in ICU because of an incident occurring in Monika’s care. After hearing her story I am pretty lucky my dog is in the shape she is in. We are hopeful for a fully recovery but it’s going to take a long time. I CANNOT allow this to happen to anyone else or their beloved family dog. This isn’t just a simple story of crappy customer service. This is abuse. This is a living breathing animal who is deeply loved by their family. I know I’ll never get the truth as to what happen to my dog. And I know it’s my word against hers. But these injuries on my dog are not of a dog altercation. I am taking the necessary steps and contacting the right authorities to make sure I’m doing everything I can to prevent this from happening ever again. Feel free to share to make people aware of what’s going on. Especially pet owners. These are the pictures of her sores. I am unable to show a video of how she walks currently because the vet said she is to be on strict rest. I have to keep her medicated on pain killers(mildly sedative) muscle relaxants and anti inflammatories.
