A Note Home from the Teacher: Dear Parents of Stock Show Kids, Ag teachers, Extension Agents & Supporters of Agricultural Programs, Keep doing what you’re doin...g. All the early morning feedings, the road trips, the barn chores, the money spent, the time invested, the arguments on the wash rack, the contests attended, the lessons from the losses, the show ring victories... it’s all worth it. What you’re doing is important & you’re changing the lives of the kids you’re working with - even though you may not see it right now. You see, I work as a Dean of Students for a district where 98% of our students are bussed in from other larger schools. They come to us because they are at-risk academically, socially disadvantaged or have had discipline issues. Everyday I teach, mentor & encourage kids ages 5-18 and their stories of their home lives would literally break your heart. They’ve suffered abuse, parents in jail, living in cars, CPS removals and it’s all just a normal way of life for them. You have no idea how many times a week I think to myself, What If... What if they had the opportunity to grow up in a stock show family? What if they could experience raising an animal who taught them about responsibility & compassion? What if they were surrounded by a support group of stock show families, Ag teachers & extension agents who wanted to see them succeed? Imagine.. .what if. Don’t get me wrong, my students are fabulous, however, they don’t have parents who make them do barn chores, Ag teachers who haul them to contests, stock show families who cheer them on or livestock projects to nurture. These kids don’t have people at home who care about their schoolwork, push them to be better or hold them accountable for their actions. So parents, the next time you wonder why you spend so much time and invest so much money into your kids’ livestock projects... this is why. Ag teachers & agents, when you question why you spend days away from your own family helping kids at shows .... this is why. What you’re doing matters. You’re changing the lives of kids every single day, and in my opinion, you’re making the next generation of kids stronger. You’re helping shape the lives of young people in a time where mainstream kids are desperately trying to survive. Keep doing what you’re doing!
