Gabriola Arts Council 10.06.2021

Have you been to the Gabriola Art Pandemic page lately? The past year has been fantastic and for May it is a free-for-all. No theme, no prize, just art - of any description....as long as it follows the page rules. Pop on by and scroll through what your friends and neighbours have been posting. It will make you smile. We change the cover page every morning to keep you on your toes.

The Gabriola Arts Council is assisting our friends at the Commons find some volunteer labour. One or two people willing to dig! It is a trench for electrical cables that will bring power to the Timber Frame, which is great news for everyone. Here’s what Bob Andrew had to say... Not a huge amount of digging, just a bit rough. The one dig is partly dug. It is up against the reservoir and is about 8’ long and 5-6’ deep. The other is just a hole probably 3 or 4’ deep in loose ...but rubbly soil. Doesn’t really need two folks. Thought they might want to have company. If you are interested in lending your strength for a community cause ideally on a Saturday morning (10:00-12:00). Lunch provided! Bob’s phone: is 250-325-8059 or 250-668-8059. Thank you!

Our very own GAC Board member April Vannini and her husband Philip Vannini have been honoured for their documentary film - Inhabited. Over three years of travel across ten Canadian UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites, Inhabited introduces us to the individuals, communities, and families who live there and invites us to re-imagine our connection to wild ecosystems. Best International Documentary at the Rocky Mountain International Film Festival. Learn more about their film ...at https://inhabitedfilm.ca There is a book as well and the film will be released in the Fall. Stay tuned for announcements for a local screening. Congratulations!

The Isle of the Arts Festival wrapped up a week ago Sunday. The streaming equipment is all put away, participants are revelling at what they made and learned, instructors have been paid, debriefing has happened, and the reports have been filed. What hasn't happened is an acknowledgement of the wonderful work done by our Festival Coordinator, Victoria Banford. Great job all around with her professional manner, great work ethic, and attention to detail. Thank you for taking us through this hi-tech version of IoTA. I don't have a photo of him, but a big round of applause to Tim Gambrill for helping us shop for equipment and being our tech person throughout the festival. Thanks Tim!

Workshop proposal submissions for the 2021 IOTA Festival are now open. The Isle of the Arts Festival is a multidisciplinary celebration of the arts. Participants learn, make, and play with artists in workshops and the community comes together for evening events spotlighting the arts. We are looking for workshop proposals from artists of all disciplines. We would like to see returning workshop leaders and also encourage artists new to the festival to apply.... The deadline to submit a workshop idea is December 31, 2020. We are looking for hands on workshops, where participants are actively making something, trying something new, or learning a new approach or technique. Please pass along. We love to get submissions from people who have never taught at Isle of the Arts before. For more information go to https://artsfest.artsgabriola.ca/

Here is a list of studios that are open to the public over the next 7 days. COVID-19 protocols apply. Calling ahead is never a bad thing. Any studios not listed are open by appointment only. The list is posted outside the GAC office and there are extra Studio Guides for reference (who, what, where). Enjoy!
