(Chìthear a’ Bheurla gu h-ìosal / Please see English below) Bidh Oidhche Shamhna ’ga comharradh deireadh an t-samhraidh air neo deireadh na buana. ’S e toiseach a’ gheamhraidh a th’ann an Oidhche Shamhna dha na Gàidheil is ’s a’ cho-theacsa a tha seo, ’s e toiseach na bliadhna ùireadh a th’ann. ’S an t-seann aimsir rachadh samhnagan a lasadh air Oidhche Shamhna. ... Le bhi a' dol air ais gu na 1930an ann an saoghaltan nan Gàidheal an Albainn Nuaidh is an Albainn, bhiodh gìsearan / goisearan a’ falbh bho thaigh gu taigh air Oidhche Shamhna gus biadh, mìlsean is deoch ’fhaighinn. Tha an nòs seo a’ dol cho fad air ais gu àm an ro-eachdraidh is e a tha ’na ro-ruithear dha na samhnairean a bhios ann ’s an là an diugh. Bidh cuid do Ghàidheil na h-Albann Nuaidhe a’ deisealachadh fuarag fhathast. Air a dheanadh le uachdar-maistridh agus mìn-choirce, is a-reir an nòis ionadaile a dh'fhaodadh bonn airgid, putan, meuran agus fàinne a bhi 'gan cur ann am bobhla na fuaraige gu tric. Nam faigheadh tu is tusa ag ithe na fuaraige, am bonn airgid, bhiodh sin a’ ciallachadh gu robh thu gu bhith beartach; nam faigheadh tu am putan, nach bitheadh tu beartach idir; nam faigheadh tu am meuran, bhiodh tu ’nad sheana mhaighdean air neo 'nad sheann-fhleasgach; agus an fhàinne, bhiodh tu a’ dol a phòsadh. ’S e fiosachd am facal ’s a’ Ghàidhlig a th’air a’ chleachadh a tha seo a tha a’ dol air ais gu àm an ro-eachdraidh . Beannachdan na Samhna air a h-uile duine againn! Halloween marks the end of summer or harvest season. For Gaels, Halloween is the beginning of winter and in this context, the start of the New Year. In earlier times, bonfires would be lit on Halloween. Going back to the 1930s in the worlds of Gaelic Nova Scotia and Scotland, guisers https://www.whfp.com//gisearachd-cabbage-stalks-and-egg-/ would go from house to house on Halloween to obtain food, sweets and drink. This tradition going as far back as prehistory, is a precursor to the trick or treaters of our present day. Some Nova Scotia Gaels still prepare fuarag. Made with whipped cream and oatmeal, and according to the local tradition a coin, button, thimble and ring may be placed in the fuarag bowl. If while eating the fuarag you got the coin, that would mean that you were to be wealthy; if you got the button, you wouldn’t wealthy at all; if you got the thimble, you would be a spinster or bachelor; and the ring, that you would be married. Fiosachd (divination) is the Gaelic word for this practice that goes back to prehistory. The blessings of Samhain on all! #ExploreGaelicNovaScotia #CuireolasairnaGaidheil #GaelicNS #Gaidhlig #Gaelic Nova Scotia Culture
