Sports and energy drinks are terrible for your teeth. The pH levels in these drinks breed bacteria and can cause irreversible erosion to tooth enamel. If you indulge in a post-game or post-workout energy drink, be sure to rinse with water afterward or chew a stick of sugar-free gum. Better yet replace your sports drink with water!
Kids love their juice, but there’s a time and a place for drinking it if you want to protect their oral health.
We collaborated with NOW Magazine to celebrate Oral Health Month. Let us know if you have any questions about your oral health at your next visit! #mississauga #OralHealthTips
Ever wondered the proper way to hold floss? Wrap 18 inches of floss around your index or middle finger. Hold it 1 to 2 inches apart between your thumb and index finger. Gently place the floss between your teeth, curving it in a C shape along the side of one tooth. Move the floss up and down several times on each side of the tooth. Be careful not to force the floss between the teeth or too far under the gums. Flossing shouldn’t hurt! When you’re done with one tooth, remove the floss and wrap the floss around your fingers to a clean piece of floss before moving to the next tooth.
Charcoal toothpastes are advertised as an easy way to get a whiter smile, but they may be doing more harm than good. Since charcoal is an abrasive mineral, it can actually wear away tooth enamel and expose the softer, more yellow dentin layer. Always chat with us first before trying an alternative dental product, because we want to help keep your teeth and gums nice and healthy.
Veneers are customized to blend in beautifully with your natural teeth. We use shade guides to help select the colour that’s just right for your smile.
Do you have trouble saying aaaaah? Many patients have difficulty opening their mouths wide. This article explains how the jawbone works, and how treatment can help you open wide again.
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar that’s often found in chewing gum and mints. But unlike regular sugar (sucrose, glucose, and fructose), Xylitol actually has the power to reduce tooth decay, dry mouth, and gum disease. It’s also been proven to increase bone density and improve a person’s overall oral health. While Xylitol is toxic to dogs, it’s perfectly safe for humans and has been recognized by Health Canada for its oral care benefits. So feel free to pop a Xylitol mint or stick of Xylitol chewing gum, knowing it’s helping to reduce oral bacteria and protect your tooth enamel.
People living with diabetes are more prone to gum disease. In fact, 22% of people with diabetes also have gum disease. Treatment, such as dental cleaning, can help combat gum disease and may help decrease blood sugar levels.
Floss picks come in a variety of sizes and are easy to use one-handed. While they can’t be wrapped around the whole tooth surface, they’re useful for people with small mouths or dexterity issues, children who can’t manage a string of floss, or if you’re flossing for someone else.

A glass of orange juice tastes pretty terrible if you’ve just brushed your teeth, but it has nothing to do with the minty flavour of your toothpaste. Orange juice is sweet, but it’s also a little sour. The foaming agent in your toothpaste temporarily blocks the taste receptors on your tongue that register whether something is sweet which means you can only taste the sour part of the juice.
Happy 2021! We look forward to helping you achieve your oral health goals this year and every year!
Happy New Year! If you make one new year's resolution this year, may we suggest that you floss every day? Your teeth and your overall health will thank you!
When shopping for a new toothbrush, look for one with soft bristles. Some people assume that medium or hard bristles provide more cleaning power, but they can end up damaging your gums and enamel. Soft bristles are gentler on your teeth and gums and the bristles are flexible, making it easier to clean under the gumline.
Dentures need to be cleaned daily in order to maintain good oral hygiene. Remove and rinse your dentures after eating to remove bits of food and prevent staining. Then use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your mouth and remove any adhesive (if you use it). Once a day, soak them in non-abrasive denture cleanser and gently scrub them with a soft-bristled brush. Overnight, keep your dentures moist by soaking them in warm or cool water or a mild denture solution. Rinse them thoroughly in the morning before putting them back in. Any questions about cleaning your dentures? We’re always here to help!
