Announcing the second virtual workshop in the Creating as Care series! Suncatchers with Annie Beach will be launched on 1C03’s IGTV next Wednesday March 17. Annie writes: For myself, this past year, creating through care has taken the form of self-care by spending more time outdoors and going for walks, spending more time with myself to learn, grow, and reflect. My art practice has largely revolved around public art collaborations and painting murals with the help of commu...nity participation, often with a focus in natural plants and medicines from this territory, as a means to reconnect with my Cree/Saulteaux identity. And having to stay home, the Suncatcher project is a perfect way for anyone to create a public art piece, to hang either outside a window or on a tree branch or fence, to give colour, medicine, life, and to give back to your community. If you’re planning to participate in the workshop, you may want to gather your materials in advance: -natural plant materials found from outside -pie plate, trays, different sizes (check your recycling bin to reduce/reuse!) -container of water -string, yarn, or sinew -food colouring (optional) @annie_beach is a visual artist, born and based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Treaty One Territory. Beach is Cree/Saulteaux/Ukrainian, with relations from Peguis First Nation and Brokenhead First Nation. She is a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (Honours) from the University of Manitoba’s School of Art, where she has sat on the School of Fine Art Student Association as Co-President for a number of years. Beach has curated, designed, and executed over a dozen mural projects throughout the city and works as art instructor with a variety of youth, community arts and cultural-based organizations. Beach is also one of three recipients of the 2019 Hnatyshyn Foundation Emerging Artist prize. Image ID: First image is headshot of Annie who faces camera but looks slight to the side and is smiling. Annie has dark curly hair pulled back, wears striking red lipstick and yellow eyeshadow and has a black top on. Behind Annie is colourful fabric printed with flowers (kookum scarf). Second image is Annie's suncatcher hanging in front of an urban landscape with the roof of buildings visible behind it. The suncatcher is made of ice that has been dyed orange and has various natural plant items of different shapes and textures embedded within it.

You can still watch Un/Spoken on VUCAVU until tomorrow! Over the past few days, we’ve been introducing you to the artists featured in the online video screening program. Last but not least is Karin Lee whose Small Pleasures is an interesting companion to Sky Hopinka’s Anti-Objects, or Space Without Path or Boundary which also features speakers of Chinuk wawa. Small Pleasures is a unique film featuring three women (First Nations, Chinese and European) who use the pre-c...olonial trade language of Chinook Jargon to convey to each other complex ideas about feminist resistance in late 19th century Canada. The film is based on the life experiences of the filmmaker's great-grandmother Tsang Ho Shee, inspiring thought about inter-cultural dialogue over a century ago. Karin Lee is a media artist whose films, installations and writing spans over two decades, with fiction and non-fiction films reflecting the contemporary issues of our day as well as the themes of the Asian diaspora, women, gender, identity and sexuality. Her solo show at the Sum Gallery in Vancouver’s Art in Pride Society, was the inaugural exhibition in Vancouver. As a filmmaker, Karin co-produced Cedar and Bamboo, a documentary about children of Chinese and First Nations parents, wrote, directed and produced the web series Plan B, a dark comedic drama about an abortion clinic, and is currently in post-production for Girl with Big Feet (Ts'ekoo Cha Ke), a period drama. A fourth generation Canadian, Karin was born, raised and is based in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. Watch Small Pleasures and the rest of the Un/Spoken program for free on VUCAVU (link in bio) until tomorrow, November 18. Un/Spoken is presented by Gallery 1C03 The University of Winnipeg, Video Pool Media Arts and Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art as part of the exhibition Sovereign Intimacies.
