Denise Nonomura: Portraits of a Pandemic is one of three exhibitions opening next Saturday, October 17th which look at how artists in our community responded to and reflected on the early days and months of COVID-19. While individuals around the world have turned to the arts as a way of coping with COVID-19, artists have adopted differing strategies in keeping their artistic practice alive and relevant. Gallery Stratford is presenting the work of four artists, Denise Nonomur...a - Artist, Bonnie Bonn Richardson, Michael Walton and Tara Walton, who have all taken different journeys in responding to this global pandemic. Each of these artists have used their artistic and creative practice to help them make sense and understand our changing world, while also providing them with a creative means to cope and move forward. These three exhibitions open on Saturday, October 17th and run through the beginning of 2021. Due to the changing restrictions imposed by COVID-19 an exact closing date has not been announced. In order to maintain a safe viewing environment there will be no opening reception. Denise Nonomura will be in the gallery for an informal opportunity to Meet-the-Artist on Saturday, October 17th from noon to 5 pm. She will also be available on Sunday, October 18th and Saturday, October 24th to discuss her work with you. Gallery Stratford has enhanced COVID-19 safety protocols in place. Gallery Hours are Thursday & Friday noon to 8 pm and Saturday & Sunday noon to 5 pm. This is one of three new pandemic themed exhibitions we are opening next weekend. The outpouring of creative responses to COVID-19 around the world is proof of the important role that art and creativity play in our lives and how art functions as a universal mode of communication. The past seven months have forced all of us to be flexible and adapt to change. As a public institution it is our responsibility to facilitate discussion about the issues and challenges of socie...ty. All three of the exhibitions that open October 17th provide us with the opportunity to see how four artists living and working in our community personally responded to and dealt with the early days of this pandemic. Most of the work was created when we were all still in lockdown and the exhibitions were planned when things were starting to look like we were inching towards some return to normality. As we watch numbers climb once again, and regions around the world are once again returning to various levels of restricted activity, these exhibitions are a poignant reminder and document of the 2020 pandemic. Picture of the Future TBA: Images by Michael Walton & Poetry by Tara Walton is Michael and Tara's first public exhibition and will open this Saturday, October 17th together with Denise Nonomura: Portraits of a Pandemic and Bonnie Richardson: COVID-19 Impressions and run through the beginning of 2021. Due to the changing restrictions imposed by COVID-19 an exact closing date has not been announced. In order to maintain a safe viewing environment there will be no opening reception.
