First tomato of the outdoor growing season!!! A few days ago I took a look and saw a small #RomaTomato forming on one of my container plants. I took a photo and became sad thinking the plant had blossom end rot. Today I took another look and am happy to say there is no BER! Yay! The Roma Paste variety is my wife’s favourite variety so I decided to grow 7 plants on the driveway side of my deck in containers so she can see them growing and developing. You should be able to pi...ck tomatoes in the rain from the comfort of the covered deck. Just about to crash for the evening after a long day of working in the garden when I realized that I haven’t been shooting any videos. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll start filming a few things. Tomorrow or rather later today I’m hoping to complete the following tasks: 1. Add undyed cedar mulch to the top of my raised beds... 2. Setup my new t-post trellis system in three raised beds for my tomatoes. 3. Transplant cabbage, broccoli and lettuce to a raised bed. 4. Sow three varieties of carrots with a few neighbourhood kids in a raised bed. 5. Setup trellises for cucumber section. 6. Completely clear all weeds from my herb garden, lay cardboard, mulch and fresh compost. Goal is to be preventative instead of reactive when it comes to controlling weeds. 6. Transplant four new berry varieties to my new berry patch next to the herb garden. 7. Till an area in my backyard and setup my melon patch (I may delay this until next weekend as I’ll need more compost and top soil to finish thus the potential delay. 8. Plant some tomatoes in my driveway 10G containers. 9. Start some flowers from seed in planters. 10. Start moving pepper plants to my greenhouses. 11. Cook some chicken in the smoker. Low and slow. 12. Add mulch to the Elevated Beds, and Container. Lots to do! Once everything is in the ground then it’s just maintenance, water, fertilize, check for pests and protect the harvest! I have a strong feeling that this will be my best year ever in the garden! So I decided to bring three pepper plants indoors to over winter them in hopes of having a head-start for Spring 2021. If I’m successful I’ll likely winterize additional plants next winter. As I started to prune my #SuperKhiPepper leaves, branches and dried peppers I had a flashback to Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid movies as he would often prune his bonsai tree. The Super Khi peppers are around 40,000-50,000 Scoville Units.... Interestingly the plant has a few flowers and new leaf growth since being indoors. The flowers won’t be pollinated indoors and I won’t be hand pollinating them so the flowers will eventually fall off. The primary goal is to try and keep the plant in a type of hibernation until Spring. Hoping that the dried peppers will have viable seeds that I can germinate into new plants for friends and family. Forgot to add that our family rabbit absolutely loves the fresh pepper leaves! Best place on my property for peppers seems to be my porch. Lots of sunshine and protected from crazy rainfall by the porch roof. All of my pepper plants are either budding, flowering or developing their fruit. In these photos I'm growing: Super Khi (hot), Cherry Bomb (hot), Super Shepherd (sweet), Sriracha (hot), Basket of Fire (hot), Cayenne (hot) x2, Jalapeno (hot).
