Here's a smart money saving tip offered by Forbes: Pay Attention to Prices at the Grocery Store Instead of grabbing the brands you're used to, see what brands have the best value for that week. This changes throughout the month, so it’s important to pay attention to where you can cut some costs by staying on top of the deals being offered in-store. This comes especially handy when purchasing products like toilet paper and paper towels, or locally grown produce. Check to see what's on sale, and be sure to look closely at the labels, as they'll usually tell you how much you're paying per unit.

Identifying Your Keys Does your keychain have a ring with multiple keys that all look the same? Here's an easy tip to be able to quickly tell them apart: Use different coloured paint to colour code them! You can even coordinate the colours with an easy-to-remember trick - use orange for the office, or green for the garage; so the first letter of each colour matches the place the key is for.... This week's Wednesday Wisdom Q & A is... Q: Is a heated driveway worth the expense? A: Your sore back is screaming for a break from shoveling your driveway for the tenth time in two weeks. Or, perhaps you’re tired of bundling up in all those layers and snowplowing the driveway, only to do it all over again tomorrow. If you’d invested in a heated driveway, you could be cozy and warm right now ... But what’s involved in getting one installed, and how much is it going to cost? Radiant heating slabs have been growing in popularity in areas that are prone to heavy snowfall, but are they a wise investment? The home experts at Reader’s Digest Canada weigh in below; let’s take a look at the pros and cons. TYPES OF HEATED DRIVEWAYS There are two systems available for heating driveways: 1) A water-based hydronic system, or 2) an electric system. Electric systems use heating mats and cables, in a grid pattern, installed under the driveway’s surface. Electric systems are also more affordable to install since you don’t need to purchase a boiler to heat the water. However, the cost of operating an electric system is higher. Installing a hydronic system involves putting in PEX tubing under the driveway’s surface. The tubing is filled with a non-freezing water solution that circulates through the boiler which is generally placed in the garage. Neither system requires much maintenance, although if you go with a hydronic system, have the boiler inspected once a year. HOW MUCH DOES A HEATED DRIVEWAY COST? While heated driveways will help you save on snow removal and damage often caused by salt and ice melting products, they are pricey to install. If an existing driveway needs to be removed to install the system, expect to pay $16,000 or more to install a heating system for an average-size driveway. If the system is installed during new construction, it will cost less. You’ll also want to factor in that you’ll pay more in utilities because the systems use gas or electricity to operate. However, if installed correctly, you’ll get about 20 years of use from a heated driveway before it needs replacement. That’s a lot of shoveling and snow blowing you won’t have to do!

Your gutters are the most efficient way to move water running off of your roof to keep it far away from the foundation of your home. This helps prevent problems like wet crawl spaces and foundation wash-out, among other issues, so it's important to know how to clean them properly. Cleaning gutters is pretty simple stuff, but a lot of people try to make it difficult. Your goal should be to get as much debris out of the gutter itself without sending it into the downspout, where... clogs form readily and are difficult to dislodge. Follow these three easy steps in order for best success: 1. Work from the corners. Always remove debris from the corners and downspouts toward the center of the gutter. If you do it the other way, you risk moving material into the downspouts and creating jams that are no fun to remove. 2. Scoop out the middle. Debris in the middle needs to be removed next, and remove as much as you can while you’re at it. Don’t count on flushing it down the downspout, since that can add to jams. Use your hand, a trowel, or a gutter scoop and dump your debris into a bucket or drop it onto a tarp on the ground. 3. Check your elbows. Elbows are a common place for clogs to form, so check all the elbows in your downspout for trouble. If there is a clog, you may be able to clear it with a blast of water from your garden hose. Bigger blockages might need a power washer or plumber’s snake to break free. Once you’ve cleaned your gutters out, run some water through them with your hose to make sure they’re not leaking anywhere. This is the best time to repair them, since they’re fairly clean and will be much easier to manipulate. If you’ve got areas that are leaking, apply some sealant or replace the section, depending on the cause of the leak. This is also an excellent time to install some sort of gutter guard if you’ve got an interest in them. Remember that gutter guards still need to be cleaned, but tend to protect better against clogs. This week's Feature Friday shout out goes to Alpine Rocco! Alpine Rocco left us a 5 star review, which we've included in its entirety below because we're so blown away by the fabulously detailed review and kind words. ... We appreciate you taking the time to leave us such a wonderful review - and are happy to hear you have so many compliments from neighbours and strangers alike! "Despite being excited about the opportunity to improve a huge part of my home's overall appearance (and energy efficiency), I was nevertheless naturally ignorant about modern garage doors but quite determined on finding the best overall product/service combo available. As such, I expended quite a bit of time researching via numerous phone calls and site visits/quotes in order to discover the best quality garage door available for my home, i.e., Ontario's very own Richards-Wilcox. But a high quality garage door would also demand a high-quality install, and only Garage Door Canada provided a team of TWO installers versed exclusively in all things R-W. And based on an excellent, detailed follow-up visit with Walt (where by this point he commented that I sounded more like a product manager than a customer!) I ordered my new door. As the installation just happened this past Friday before Thanksgiving, my overall experience has basically left me grateful for Dave's and Wyatt's outstanding attention to detail and incredible level of conscientiousness: this team showed real respect not only for my home but for the product itself. I am just really pleased that my pretty exhaustive research truly paid off in a flawless install of the best-looking, highest quality garage door in my (extended) neighbourhood---even strangers are complimenting its high-quality appearance! Once again, thank you very much for a first class experience Walt, Dave and Wyatt!" If YOU have a review you'd like to post for Garage Door Canada, please visit this link: bit.ly/2mfxAaD

This week's Wednesday Wisdom Q & A is... Q: How can I upgrade my garage? A: If you live in the home of your dreams but your garage is simply where you park, stop right there. There’s no reason your garage can’t be every bit as spectacular as your home. To get things moving in the right direction, our friends at Garage Living offer these six ways to upgrade your garage and create the space you’ve always wanted.... 1. Get Organized Wall organizers can help you cut the clutter in no time at all by getting your items off the floor and onto the walls for easy access and storage. You can also consider overhead storage units. They can support over 600 pounds and are available in a variety of sizes. Either option will create room to walk, play, work and easily park. 2. Cabinet Systems Not everything has to hang from the walls. Adding cabinets to your garage is a great way to store smaller items or items you have in bulk. Fitted cabinets offer more stability, while free-standing cabinets can be moved, allowing you to further tweak your garage in the future if demand warrants it. 3. Insulate Spend more time in your garage even during the coldest months by insulating it. Insulation will make the space more enjoyable year-around, and it will also reduce your energy bills. 4. Upgrade Your Garage Door Your garage door is often one of the first things people see when arriving at your home, so be sure it makes a great first impression. Garage Door Canada offers a wide variety of garage doors to fit any architecture, ensuring you’ll find the right door for your home. 5. Update Your Interior Door It doesn’t draw as much attention as your garage door, but don’t ignore the door between your garage and your home. If the door is in poor condition, replace it. If it’s in good shape, try a fresh coat of paint. 6. Don’t Forget the Floor Want an upgrade you’ll appreciate every time you step foot in your garage? Refurbish the concrete flooring by covering it with a durable coating for a clean and attractive surface.

This week's Wednesday Wisdom Q & A is... Q: Why should I insulate my garage? A: Most people don’t think about insulating their garages - but without insulation, the temperature in the garage will be about the same as it is outside. So, if it is hot, your garage will be hot. If it is cold, your garage will be cold.... These fluctuations in temperature in your garage could potentially damage items you store in your garage. Plus, they can increase risks of certain hazards, like storing spray paint, gasoline, and other chemicals at extreme cold or hot temperatures. Not to mention, the changes in temperature inside the garage can also affect the temperatures inside your house. Each time you open the door to your home, all that hot or cold air gets sucked inside causing your air conditioner or furnace to run. Also, in some homes, the interior wall of the garage that’s shared with the main home is not insulated either. As a result, the cold air inside the garage can cause cold air transfer and the hot air inside the garage can cause hot air transfer loss as your cooling or heating system tries to keep up with the affected temperatures. Hopefully, now you can start to see the importance of insulating your garage. So, where do you start? STEP 1: UPGRADE YOUR GARAGE DOOR TO AN INSULATED GARAGE DOOR The easiest place to start is by getting a new insulated garage door. Insulated garage doors not only help maintain more even temperatures in the garage, but also can add to the curb appeal and value of your home - making it a great return on your investment. STEP 2: UPGRADE WINDOWS WITH THERMAL GLASS If your garage has windows, verify they’re thermal glass. Thermal glass helps reduce cold air and hot air loss through the glass. There are several different types of thermal glass on the market. If you get an insulated garage door with windows, make sure to upgrade to thermal glass too. STEP 3: ADD INSULATION TO THE EXTERIOR WALLS OF YOUR GARAGE Depending on whether your garage is unfinished or finished will determine what insulation method will work best. For unfinished garages, it is easy to install rolled insulation in spaces in between the studs, which are called bays. Don’t forget to also insulate the roof, if it’s not insulated or is poorly insulated. Afterward, you can install drywall to provide another layer of insulation protection. If you have a bonus room above your garage, you may not need to insulate the ceiling as it should have insulation in it when the house was built. However, you may want your contractor to double-check this for you. If it needs insulation, spray foam is a good choice as it will limit the number of holes in the garage ceiling. If your garage is already finished, you can add insulation inside the walls using spray foam insulation. This is one of the easiest options because you only need to drill minimal holes in the walls that aren’t difficult to patch over once the insulation is installed.

This week's Wednesday Wisdom Q & A is... Q: How can I get my garage ready for the cold weather? A: The cooler months and shorter days of fall are upon us and it won’t be long before winter will arrive. Now is the time to prepare your garage and garage door for winter. The following tips are a few important things you’ll want to make sure to do before the cold, blustery winds and snow arrive.... SEAL THE GARAGE DOOR You can check the seal on the door during the day. Close the garage door and shut off all lights inside the garage. Look for any gaps where light is coming in around, above, under, or in between the door panels. This tells you the door is not sealed. There should be weather stripping around the entire door and you shouldn’t see any light coming in from outside if it is sealed correctly. Make sure to have the door properly sealed and replace any missing or damaged seals, garage door panels, etc. LUBRICATE MOVING COMPONENTS AND PARTS Whether you have an automatic opening garage door or have to open and close it manually, you’ll want to make sure all of those moving components and parts are well-lubricated. Lubrication will help prevent the parts and components from seizing up once temperatures drop below freezing. SCHEDULE A GARAGE DOOR INSPECTION Your garage door has several moving parts and components that could fail in the winter. Now is the time to have a professional check your door to verify everything is working correctly. The last thing you want to experience is to having your garage door get stuck open on a snowy winter day. REPLACE THE GARAGE DOOR WITH A NEW INSULATED DOOR If you’re tired of the coldness in the garage when getting into your car or retrieving other items, you might want to replace your existing door with a new insulated garage door. The insulation not only helps keep the garage warmer, but also could help lower the heating costs for your home too! REORGANIZE YOUR GARAGE This is more of a general housekeeping tip, however, it’s an important one you’ll want to do now. Move any snow shovels, your snow blower, rock salt, etc. out of the location where you buried these items last spring. Make sure they’re easily accessible because you’ll need them at some point this winter, like after a large snowfall blocks your garage door and the snow needs cleared away. We’re Here to Help You! Local: 905.957.4432 Toll free: 1.877.664.4432 Make an appointment to visit our showroom today at 8268 Regional Rd 20 in Smithville

Jar Budgeting Remember when your parents used to put their spare change into a jar, then a few times a year you'd spend your afternoons rolling those coins to get them ready for the bank? Using a similar idea of using jars to save money, jar budgeting allows you to become more aware of what you're spending. Credit cards somewhat disassociate you from the purchase because you're not seeing physical money exchange hands. When you use cash, it increases the awareness of an actua...l transaction occurring. Here's how to make jar budgeting work for you: 1. Determine a monthly spending amount that you're comfortable with, based on the income you're earning. 2. Divide your cash into jars with budgets for different purchases. For example; groceries, gas, entertainment, savings, etc. This helps ensure you don’t spend too much in one area. 3. Stick to your monthly budgets within each jar!

This week's Wednesday Wisdom Q & A is... Q: How can I Reduce My Energy Bill for the Fall? A: Now that fall has arrived, it’s time to tackle those heat-wasters that can increase your energy bill during the coldest months of the year.... According to homestructions.com, there are four big culprits when it comes to those skyrocketing autumn energy bills. Here’s how to eliminate them: 1. UNSEALED AREAS One of the easiest ways to save money on your energy bills is by finding and sealing the cracks, crevices, gaps and holes where cold air sneaks inside. Most homeowners are aware that they should caulk their window frames to cut down on heating and cooling costs, but here are some other places to seal up: Areas behind cabinetry Chimneys Exterior walls Gaps between walls and baseboards Spaces around recessed lighting fixtures and electrical outlets Utility cutouts for pipes 2. LEAKY WINDOWS & DOORS Drafty older windows and doors can cause heat loss, an overburdened heater, and increased operating costs. When a home’s foundation settles over time, windows and doors often no longer fit properly in their frames. Installing energy-efficient windows and doors is an investment that keeps a home draft-free. If you can’t afford to replace them, cover unused doors and windows with heavy plastic. For the main entrance, seal and caulk around the frame, and use a product specifically made to keep cold air from seeping under the door. The sun’s heat naturally warms your home during the day. When the sun goes down (along with the temperature), close insulated window draperies to retain accumulated heat from earlier in the day. Lower the thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees at night, and you’ll cut your annual energy costs by up to 10%. 3. INSUFFICIENT INSULATION The right insulation acts as an interior barrier against the outside elements. Insulating spaces like attics, basements and garages can reduce your utility bills. Schedule an energy audit or assessment with a reputable heating contractor. The reports generated from the audit will provide recommendations for improving energy efficiency and lowering future energy costs. 4. INEFFICIENT HEATING SYSTEMS Over time, heating systems become inefficient and must work harder to heat your home. New heaters are more energy-efficient, eco-friendly and can lower energy costs. During installation, have the technician check, clean and repair existing duct work for true energy efficiency. Investing in a new heating system is expensive, but you will see immediate savings on your monthly utility bills. Make sure the heating contractor uses certified and well-trained technicians.

Now that it's officially Fall, we want to make sure the leaves are the only thing falling! Did you know that the most common household hazard is simply falling? In fact, one out of five older adults who fall incurs a broken bone or a head injury - and wet floors, slippery stairs, and scattered toys tend to be the culprits that create the potential for falls. SafeWise.com offers the following ways you can reduce the risk of falling in your home. Stabilize Staircases:... Make sure all staircases have solid handrails, securely affixed flooring, adequate lighting, and safety gates if there are small children or pets in your home. Don't leave items on the stairs, as that's one of the quickest ways to cause injury. Clear Your Outdoor Steps: Keep all outside stairs clear of debris and hazards like ice and snow. Secure fix mats in place or use grip tape to make surfaces less slippery. Cover Slippery Surfaces in Bathrooms: Secure rugs to avoid slipping and to prevent water from pooling on slick surfaces. Non-slip stickers are a particularly good way to keep everyone in your home from slipping in the shower. Corral Toys: Even a small toy can be a tripping hazard. Give your kids an easy way to stow toys and make sure every play date ends without injury. Secure skateboards, bikes, and other mobile toys in a safe area where family members and visitors won’t trip on them.

This week's Wednesday Wisdom Q & A is... Q: What’s the best way to properly care for my garage door? A: With proper garage door care and maintenance, your garage door will perform reliably for years to come - especially if it’s a Richards-Wilcox door! ... Depending on the environmental elements you live within, here are some care and maintenance recommendations. WINTER ENVIRONMENT For areas where winter road salt is used, here are recommendations on how to provide garage door care. Every 6 Months: Wash the garage door and windows with a mild soap (such as car wash soap or dish washing soap) and water. Wash both interior and exterior. Rinse thoroughly. Do not use harsh or abrasive detergents. Do not use a pressure washer to rinse door. Lubricate garage door track and hinges with silicone or Teflon based spray. Do not use WD-40 type lubricant (oil-based), or grease. Then open and close the garage door to distribute the lubricant. Every 12 Months: Inspect garage door springs and hardware for signs of wear. Avoid any contact with the torsion springs, as they are under extreme tension. As Needed: Clean off road salt from garage door interior and exterior surfaces. Use a mild soap (such as car wash soap or dish washing soap) and water. Rinse thoroughly. Do not use harsh or abrasive detergents and do not use a pressure washer to rinse the door. If surface rust appears or you think there may be any issues, immediately contact Garage Door Canada for inspection and garage door repair options. COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS & HARSH ENVIRONMENTS For areas with exposure to sea salt, fog, a high level of dirt, or other airborne substances, here are recommendations on how to provide garage door care. At Installation: Apply a good quality car wax to the garage door immediately after installation; unless you are going to paint the door. Follow car wax application instructions - but do not apply wax to ACCUFINISH, ARMORFINISH, or anodized aluminum doors! For ArmorBrite (powder coated) doors wait a minimum of 3 months to apply wax. Every 6 Months / Every 12 Months / As Needed: Use the same instructions as above for Winter Environment. PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS The exterior and interior of Richards-Wilcox garage doors are painted with a baked-on finish, so no additional painting is required. However, if another colour is desired, the following instructions should be followed: Clean the surface of the door with a powder cleanser, like Comet, to remove protective wax, as well as dirt and grease. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. Use acrylic latex water-based exterior paint. Apply according to paint and manufacturer’s instruction. Any high quality exterior latex paint is acceptable. Do not use oil based or any rust inhibitive paint. Do not paint in direct sunlight or when the door surface is warm to the touch, as lap marks will result. Brush application is recommended.

KEEP YOURSELF SAFE Your garage door gets a lot of use from the numerous times it is opened and closed. Eventually, there can be something that goes wrong or leaves you in need of repair. While you may be tempted to do the repairs yourself because you've watched some YouTube videos that make it look "easy enough", there are many reasons why this is not a good idea - and why you should turn to a professional garage door technician instead. The two biggest reasons are:... 1 PERSONAL SAFETY First and foremost, you want to keep yourself safe. There are a lot of moving parts to a garage door, not to mention it's pretty heavy. Trying to fix it when you're not trained to do so, could be dangerous. Your hand could get pinched in between door panels or moving parts. Or worse, the door could come off its tracks and injure you. Having a professional garage door technician take care of your repairs means you don't risk injury to yourself. 2 PREVENT CAUSING MORE DAMAGE There are all sorts of things that can and will go wrong if you don't know what you're doing. There's electrical wiring, chains, rods, springs, and other equipment that allow the door to open and close. Not understanding how these work or how to fix them when they need to be repaired could result in causing more damage to the garage door. (If you've ever attempted to fix anything around your home before and ended up making it worse, you know what we're talking about, haha!) If you make a mistake trying to fix the garage door on your own, it could end up costing you more to get it repaired. Give us a call instead - we're happy to help repair your garage door for you, and help keep you safe in the process! Local: 905.957.4432 Toll free: 1.877.664.4432

This week's Wednesday Wisdom Q & A is... Q: What are the benefits of investing in a new garage door? A: A new garage door provides plenty of functional and aesthetic benefits, but what you may not realize is there are also FINANCIAL benefits of having a new garage door installed. ... If you're debating between either having your existing door repaired or investing in a new one instead, consider the following four financial benefits of buying a new garage door to make you make an educated decision. BENEFIT #1: A new garage door improves the energy efficiency of your home. If you're like most Canadian homeowners, you're constantly looking for ways to reduce your energy bills. Most people think to upgrade their windows or add insulation in their attic - but don't overlook your garage too! Upgrading to a garage door with better insulation and having new weather stripping installed around the garage door will help improve the energy efficiency of your home - and lower your energy bills. BENEFIT #2: A new garage door requires less maintenance and has a warranty. If your current garage door is ten years old or more, it can be at the point where it needs continuous repairs. And even though repairs tend to cost less than a new door, in the long run, you're actually paying more in repairs than simply investing a new garage door now. Plus, your new door requires minimal maintenance - and every door from Garage Door Canada comes with a warranty! BENEFIT #3: A new garage door protects your home better than an old, poor-functioning one. Older doors can be easier for thieves to get open and break into your home. While no one wants to come home to discover they have been robbed, unfortunately it still happens - and it's expensive to replace stolen items! Modern garage doors are more secure and include better security features and options compared to even five years ago. You can get electronic keypads that require inputting a special code to have the door open and close. Some doors and door openers also have special remote controls with enhanced security features. You'll even find some openers have their own mobile app to open and close your door, as well as alert you if it has been left open or opened while no one is at home. BENEFIT #4: A new garage door can increase the value of your home. A new garage door not only helps enhance the appearance of your home, but also can help increase its curb appeal. If you're planning on selling your home in the near future, you could actually get a higher sales offer.
