In Lynne Ramsays sophomore film, a mischievous, introspective, disturbed young woman comes face to face with grief, mortality, and the choice to engage with ones freedom despite the chaos and insecurity that might accompany it. Much of the film feels like an elongated dream sequence, but there are also moments of striking realism when you see Morvern at odds with her surroundings and attempting to find some kind of liberation from h...er circumstances which seem to be working to imprison her physically and emotionally. Trained as a photographer before endeavouring as a filmmaker, Ramsays eye is as poignant as her writing, and the cinematography is as formally impressive as it is expressive; especially when it comes to the use of saturated colours. The soundtrack is also notable and Ramsays use of music to express subtext and depth of feeling is remarkable in itself. The other remarkable achievement is Samantha Mortons performance as the protagonist, whose understated performance contains enough nuance to imply the profundity of her character in subtleties and minute actions and only a small amount of dialogue. On all fronts, while the film is artful in nature, its a film that shouldnt be defined only as art house or experimental; its very simply beautiful story telling both visually and because of its exceptional writing and acting.
