We Will Remember The Poppy The red poppy, a native plant along much of the Western Front during the First World War, has become a powerful symbol of remembrance. It is the principal emblem of the Royal Canadian Legion, which distributes several million each year to be worn by Canadians on Remembrance Day.... In Flanders Fields the Poppies Blow The familiar symbol of the poppy owes much of its fame to Canadian poet and soldier John McCrae. In Flanders Fields, McCrae’s best-known poem was inspired by and made reference to the poppies which grew along the Western Front. It opens, The blood-red poppy had long been associated with the fighting armies of Europe, and the flowers often overgrew the mass graves left by battles. During the First World War, enormous artillery bombardments completely disrupted the landscape, infusing the chalk soils with lime. The poppies thrived in the environment, their colours standing out against the blasted terrain. An Enduring Symbol The poppy is worn on the left lapel and close to the heart to recognize the sacrifice of soldiers in times of war. Canadian War Museum Royal Canadian-Legion Canadian Armed Forces

IRIS: THE FLOWER WITH A MESSAGE Great tips from #ibulb The Iris is not only unique; you could even call it magical. It can be found in every colour of the rainbow including the most stunning colour of all: blue. Did you know that there are both large-flowering and small-flowering irises?... Rainbow The name ‘iris’ is Greek for ‘rainbow’. And a very apt name it is since irises come in every colour of the rainbow. Besides the literal meaning of the word ‘iris’, Iris is also a character from Greek mythology. This was the goddess who transferred messages between the gods and people. To do so, she slipped down from heaven to earth on a rainbow. And this is also the source of the Iris’ symbolic meaning: ‘I have a message for you’. Straight into its heart The enchanting Iris belongs to the Iris family and was first mentioned around 1500 BC. This charismatic flower has three petals. As it opens slowly but surely, you can you look straight into its heart. The natural beauty of irises adds a beguiling element to a garden, and their colours are bright and expressive. In addition to their various blues, irises are also available in yellow, lilac, purple, brown and white. Some even sport two colours. Groups Bulbing irises are classified into two groups: the large-flowering and the small-flowering irises. Large-flowering irises grow to a height of 50 to 70 centimetres and produce flowers in May and June. The small-flowering irises are also known as dwarf irises. These produce small flowers with intricate markings, grow to only 15 centimetres in height, and bloom in February and March. The leaves of both groups are tubular and pointed. Planting If you want to enjoy magnificent irises in your garden early in the spring, be sure to plant them in the autumn. Large-flowering irises should be planted in a sunny position, at a depth of 5 centimetres and at 8 centimetres apart. If your region has harsh winters, protect them with a layer of straw. Small-flowering irises will bloom profusely in either sunny or semi-shady locations. Plant these bulbs three times as deep as they are tall. To create a pretty carpet of flowers in the garden, plant them in dense clusters. Interesting facts Botanists have discovered more than 200 species of irises. Most of them grow from bulbs and tubers while some emerge from rhizomes. Perhaps you don't have a garden. That’s no problem either since irises can also be planted in containers on balconies and patios. Varieties of Iris hollandica are commonly grown for their cut flowers. This makes them a fine choice for your cutting garden. In addition to bulbing irises, there are also irises that grow from rhizomes. These perennial plants are varieties of Iris germanica. #irises #Iris #flowers #garden #gardening #gardeninglife

Great advice from iBulb in the Netherlands! WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN BUYING FLOWER BULBS: The season to plant flower bulbs is underway, so it’s time to get going. But what should you keep in mind when buying them? Here are 6 tips to help you exceed your expectations and enjoy great results.... 1. The right timing It’s important to buy flower bulbs that are fresh. This is why you should buy them during the right season. If you buy them later, they may have dried out. Spring-flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths should be bought in the autumn. Summer-flowering bulbs such as dahlias, lilies, and gladioli should be bought in the spring. 2. Where to plant them Some flower bulbs will thrive in a shady spot while others will flourish in the sun. For this reason, check the packaging to see which position would be best for the flower bulbs you are selecting. Or take a look at the various kinds of bulbs at www.flowerbulbs.co.uk 3. Where to buy them You want to plant flower bulbs in your garden, but where can you buy them? Actually, you have quite a choice. You can find them at garden centres, nurseries, mail order companies, supermarkets, home improvement stores and webshops. 4. Flowering period Every kind of flower bulb has its own flowering period. Exactly when is indicated on the packaging, in the catalogue or at the webshop. By knowing this in advance, you’ll know whether it will satisfy your expectations. Tip: Plant more than one kind for consecutive flowering. This way, you can enjoy a beautiful display for even longer. 5. Climate Flower bulbs are real survivors. After all, they grow in almost every climate and soil type. Even so, some bulbs will grow better in a mild climate while others will easily tolerate severe weather conditions. If you want to know which kinds of flower bulbs will perform best in your garden, ask about this at the place where you buy them. 6. Classifying flower bulbs Some flower bulbs will produce flowers for just one season while others will bloom year after year. And some flower bulbs will increase in number over time from 10 to 100 bulbs. In short, we can classify flower bulbs into three groups: annuals (that flower for just one season), perennials (that flower for more than one season), and naturalising bulbs (that not only flower for more than one season but will also increase in number). This is just another thing you should keep in mind before buying flower bulbs. Photo courtesy of @iBulb
