I teased it before and now here it is. Let me tell you the story of my Grandmother, and why she's an important part of the Garden Kickstart story. Her name is Georgina and she was born in 1929 in Kladas, a small village in the mountains of Sparta, Greece and that's where her gardening story begins. Everyone grew their own food in the village and what they didn't grow, they traded for with someone who did. Rarely were outside sources relied upon. They were independent. Th...ey were sustainable. These were skills passed down from generation to generation. She would eventually leave and move to Toronto, finally settling into a home in the heart of East York with her new family where she was once again able to grow a garden, applying the skills and techniques she had developed prior. On this typical Toronto property, to this day, she grows enough food for her family and enough to give away to the neighbors. Even a small, informal vegetable exchange exists with her neighbors and friends. She didn't leave the village, she brought it with her here, to Toronto! Eventually I was born and the story of Garden Kickstart began. As soon as I was able to walk, my Yiayia introduced me to the garden and for years, I would be there, learning her techniques and building an appreciation and passion for gardening. As she grew older, I took on more responsibility, eventually taking over a majority of the work, but she was always there doing what she could, and teaching me. Even now at 91, she’s in the garden every day. It is, quite frankly, what keeps her alive. I mentioned in a previous post that gardening is one of the golden keys to longevity. My Yiayia's resilience is a living testament to that. At 91, she very much still has the spirit of a Spartan Warrior. She is the reason why Garden Kickstart exists today. She gave me this gift. I am ready to pass it on. Are you ready to receive it?! . . . #gardenkickstart #gardener #garden #gardenlife #urbanagriculture #kilometrezero #km0 #torontogardener #sustainability #environment #toronto #growlocal #fresh #vegetables #gardenTO #gardentoronto #citygarden #gardentotable

Time to bust the myth that growing your own food is hard. If you Google "How do I grow tomatoes" you may get a hundred different methods. Same goes with any vegetable. At the sight of this, you may get overwhelmed and call it a day however, the very fact that there are so may different methods actually gives credence to the statement "Growing food is easy!". Why? Because plants are generally forgiving. Give them soil and water, and boom, you'll have food. As a garden...er, you may think that you are growing the food however, what you're merely doing is facilitating the plants to grow themselves! There are no variations in how plants grow. A tomato plant will grow as a tomato plant does, always. Where the variations occur, is in the act of facilitating. Gardeners have been developing their own methods to best accomplish this, and all claim to have the best way. The truth is, there is no one right way, the best way is what works for you, with what resources you have, and how willing you are to expirement. Again, growing food is easy, but it does take a bit of work. Let Garden Kickstart get some of that hard work out of the equation and allow you enjoy the benefits! . . . #gardenkickstart #gardener #garden #gardenlife #urbanagriculture #kilometrezero #km0 #torontogardener #sustainability #environment #toronto #growlocal #fresh #vegetables #gardenTO #gardentoronto #citygarden #gardentotable #happygardeninglife
