This is the best time to prune your lilacs! Lilac grow on second year wood, so any new growth now will blosson next year. A single prune cut will produce two new stems. Double your blossoms by pruning the spent blossoms now.

One of my biggest concerns with DIY gardeners is that their primary concern is reducing weeds; not the health of the plant/shrub/tree. Placing weed barrier cloth, mulch and rock close to the plant may (or may not) inhibit weeds, but it does nothing to promote plant health. If you are suppressing weeds; you are also suppressing growth. Think of a weed barrier as a choker collar around your plants throat. Cutting off air, water and available nutrients to your plant only promote...s dieback and disease. Please provide a minimum 6" girth around the crown of your plant to breathe and enable it to thrive See more
