SPRING. I finally caved and started cleaning off my spring bed. I very seldom do any fall cleanup but had deadheaded most of the delphinium and lupins in fall. It has many lupins, pumonaria, peonies, short little early iris, Pasque flower...aka prairie crocus, and painted daisies. Later bloomers include delphinium, fall asters and lilies. Things are so dry so, because I don’t get to mulching as much as I would like, I decided to use chop and drop method. I chopped off th...e dried tops, broke them up, tussled the dried leaves and left them in place as much as possible. I did end up gathering the bigger stems as I realized it would be better use of time to send them through the shredder than trying to chop them up on site. Weeding included some grass along the far edge. Usually I rake everything onto a big tarp to haul to the compost pile. Today, I ended up with less than a wheelbarrow and the dried plant material will help to improve soil and retain moisture. Once the plants actually get some rain they will quickly cover up the less appealing look. See more

OVERWINTERING SUCCESSES After years of struggles my bay leaf laurel is experiencing a growth spurt. I have constantly battled scale insects on it so perhaps I have won that war as it has never done this in spring before. The leaves look very tender and I need to feed to get them to green up a bit more but I am excited by the growth. My rosemary wintered well and has also shown lots of new growth. The lavender on the right of the second picture is looking kind of scraggly but I am just glad it wintered. It is munstead. The third picture shows my topiary lavender, (I think hidcote). It was an impulse buy last year and later I regretted spending $20 on an annual. But, it too wintered, was pushing out some buds but has now begun to battle aphids and is struggling a bit. I have started putting it outside for a few hours a day.
