Wondering when it's safe to plant in the spring? Use nature as your guide! Studying when flowers are blooming or plants are leafing out can be an excellent indicator for timing on spring planting. Scott spoke about the science of phenology on GardenWorks Garden Talk earlier this month. Here's the lowdown, from the Old Farmer's Almanac. Blooming crocus-plant radishes, parsnip and spinach seed. Forsythia in bloom-safe to plant peas, onion sets and lettuce. Daffodil blossoms...-plant beets, carrots and chard. Dandelion flowers in your lawn-safe to plant potatoes Apple trees in bloom-plant bush beans. Bearded iris blooming-plant peppers and eggplants. Peonies blossoming-safe to plant heat-loving melons. Tomatoes! We are stocking up on tomatoes in our shadehouse but don't plant them out yet! Wait until the lily-of-the-valley is in full bloom, or until night temperatures are consistently over 10 deg. C. In Summerland they say wait until the big snow patches above the lake on the east side have melted! Can't go wrong with that advice.

Day neutral strawberries produce fruit beginning in June right through until frost in October. Albion has good-sized conical fruit with outstanding flavour. Our crop is ready for planting, six plants rooted into a cell pack. Fresh strawberries in October? Pinch me!

Lots of new arrivals in our shade trees this week-none of them give off WiFi signals however. But several of them have pretty blooms and they all give off oxygen!

Your houseplants will be watching the Big Game with you on Sunday (part of your bubble right?) but so will fungus gnats! These annoying creatures thrive in moist soil and can create problems in your plant roots. We now have beneficial nematodes for fungus gnats to help control them. A non-toxic and effective method; look for the packages in our fridge on the Remedy Wall.

Over the Christmas season we asked our guests if they wanted to donate to help our local food banks. Donations also came from our staff and from the owners of GardenWorks. Recently GardenWorks sent donations of $1530 each to the Summerland Food Bank and the Salvation Army Food Bank. In these unprecedented and difficult times food banks are under great pressure for their services. Thank you, our amazing customers, for your support.
