The original Hustler was the first true zero degree turning radius lawn mower - meani...ng it could make a turn within its own length. It was able to achieve this using independent drive wheels. - The original Hustler was introduced in 1964 - Made by Excel Industries who was a cab manufacturer - The idea for the twin-lever steering and independent drive wheels came from the early hay swathers Specs on The Original Hustler - Kohler Cast iron 1-cylinder horizontal side shaft engine. (approx. 10hp) - 100% all belt drive mower - Wheel drives were done with belts - 36 deck - 2 blades - Manual deck lift (the big lever out front) The 36 didn’t last long. We saw bigger things beyond just the homeowner. The Hustler 172 shortly followed and became the first high production industrial mower. With a 72 cut, these became the ideal mower for schools, colleges, governments and farms. You do this for more than five decades and try as many things as we have, you learn a thing or two.
