Gaspereau Valley 03.12.2020

Thursday already? Guess it’s time for a throwback! I almost don’t even have to say where this one was taken but I can’t post a photo without a caption. A vi...ew of the Deep Hollow Rd and the White Rock bridge looking east towards Gaspereau courtesy of photographer Edson Graham. I’d have to say sometime in the 1930’s but I could be wrong! See more

Almost forgot a throwback Thursday! S.P. Benjamin’s mill lumber yard in White Rock NS circa 1900 near the end of its 15 year operation. Around 1885 Benjamin... bought out the Calder and Freeman mills along with much of the timberlands upriver and around the surrounding lakes. Running day and night with approx 75 men employed, in one year his operation shipped 7 million board feet of lumber out of nearby ports. The route travelled by horse and ox teams over the often muddy Deep Hollow Road to Canning, Port Williams and Wolfville was no easy task. Today you would hardly ever know it was there!

It’s throwback Thursday! Deep Hollow Road - 1895 One might think that back then the road was in a lot better condition but I don’t think it has ever been in g...reat shape considering it was built over the bed of an ancient river. Thousands of years ago the Black River flowed northward to empty into the Cornwallis River and its direction passed through White Rock and along what is now the twisting Deep Hollow Rd. But at the same time the Gaspereau River was eroding and extending its reach west from the Minas Basin along the base of the south mountain. Eventually it cut into the bed of the Black River whose waters were then added to Gaspereau’s flow.

The Newtonville Schoolhouse was first built as a church in 1889 by Michael Jordan, but by 1901 it was full of children and Miss Fannie Rand was teaching. It wa...s located on the west side of Nowlan Mountain Rd across the road from the old Jordan farmhouse, not far from the Coldwell Cemetery (see comments for photo of aprox location). The doors shut for good in 1965 when it was consolidated with the newly built Gaspereau Elementary School. The building was later moved in the 1970’s to Davison Street where it later burned to the ground. If you happen to know anything about it drop me a line! I’m doing some research for someone whose grandmother was a teacher there in the 1920’s.

It’s Thursday! So how about a throwback? I’m positive some of you out there remember Earl’s General Store in Greenfield. Here’s a newspaper article from 1981 that might jog your memory.
