Today's announcement by Premier Iain Rankin and NS Chief Medical Officer of Health indicated that Regulated Health Professions, including Dentistry, will remain open. We have an approved, regularly updated COVID-19 plan that has been in place since our return last June. We will continue to adjust our in-office policies to keep our community members and staff safe as we navigate through the recent increase in COVID-19 numbers. Though she needs no introduction, this is Natalie, our Senior Assistant (senior due to experience, not age ) and today we are celebrating her 24th year with Gatchell Dentistry! She is an amazing asset to our team and we are so lucky to have her.

As a result of last night’s storm, we will be delaying our opening for today. We will assess road conditions mid-morning. If cleared our voicemail will be updated to let you know we are able to see you. If roads remain uncleared calls will be made to let those of you holding appointments know that we will not be opening.

Sometimes parents wonder when their child is considered ready to brush their teeth without help. While every child is different, we find age 6-9 is usually when a child has the dexterity to brush on their own. Watch this video to find out more.

Ever wondered the difference between a dental bridge and an implant? Dental bridges replace a missing tooth by attaching the bridge to the surrounding teeth using crowns or wings. They are a lower-cost solution and a good option if the patient has experienced bone loss where the tooth is missing. However, bridges cannot prevent further bone loss. They can cause strain on the neighbouring teeth and may need to be replaced periodically. A dental implant is a titanium screw pla...ced in the bone with an abutment and crown attached. The implant integrates with the bone for a stronger, more natural functionality and can prevent bone loss. Because it stands alone, it doesn't cause strain on the neighbouring teeth. When a child loses a primary tooth prematurely, it’s important to see us. Primary teeth play an essential role in the alignment of permanent teeth. If a child loses a tooth too early, a permanent tooth may erupt before it’s ready to fill the space. This might cause problems later on if it’s not the right tooth for the space. We can assess the growth and, in some cases, suggest the use of a space maintainer until the adult teeth are ready to erupt.

More than 30% of babies grind their teeth intermittently but it’s nothing to be concerned about. Some experts think that babies grind their teeth when they are teething, have an earache or an allergy, or they might just be testing out their new teeth.
