We are raising funds to provide support services to newcomers to Atlantic Canada such as sponsorship, settlement and integration. Coverdale Courtwork Society has launched a one-year pilot housing project that will seek to address the holistic needs of women and gender diverse individuals i...nvolved in the criminal justice system. Caitlan’s Place is a 6-bed transitional and restorative home located in Halifax that serves to prevent individuals from being remanded into custody due to housing insecurity, or from being released from incarceration into homelessness. Caitlan was a leader. She was intelligent and caring and knowledgeable about different pathways to healing. She was interested in a career in social work and dreamed of someday working together, so that she could join in the fight for Justice for women. She died while in crisis at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic has exacerbated so many structural inequalities that devastate the lives of women in our communities. Together, with Caitlans loved ones, we mourn the preventable and tragic loss of this gifted young mother and with the naming of this home, we pledge to remember her and to continue to strive for healing, justice and equity in our communities. It costs $137 per night to provide supportive and staffed housing, basic necessities, comprehensive programming and reintegrative supports to one woman on bail.
