Most of us take communication for granted, but THIS kind of communication is hard! Even for the word-nerds among us (), talking about our mental health can be a challenge. People who struggle with speech and language issues are at much higher risk of mental health concerns. Get help, and get talking. #bellletstalk SELF Wellness... https://www.rcslt.org//rcslt-social-emotional-mental-healt

We are all adjusting to the new norm of wearing a mask or face covering wherever we go. Its not easy! Its damp and smelly, hard to breathe and talk, and difficult to hear what is being said behind the mask! But, along with that is the effect it may be having on your voice. Increased volume, strain on vocal cords, paired with the general increased stress most of us are feeling can have a dramatic impact on your vocal health. Here is some information that might help. If you are struggling with voice damage, or worried about your vocal production, you may need the support of a Speech-Language Pathologist. Feel free to contact me for more information. https://www.sac-oac.ca//General_Public_Voice_Impact_Info_S

This information is nothing we SLPs didn’t know already. But so many people don’t know the importance of early intervention in speech and language delays. Reading and academic achievement relies on having good speech, language and auditory processing skills. It is a lot harder to catch up when we are only starting the process in kindergarten. https://www.ualberta.ca//early-intervention-leads-to-bette

Times are a’changing!! Our world is different now, and we have all had to change the way we live, learn, work and play. You may notice the change here too, from Polegate Speech & Language to Gateway Speech, Language & Learning. This has long been on my mind, and it seems so appropriate now as we realise how essential communication is when we aren’t able to be together. It truly is the Gateway to our personal lives. This change in name opens us up to options; to include other ...avenues of therapy and learning where possible, and to share our passion for holistic wellbeing. As of right now, the centre of my business continues to be Speech-Language Pathology. I will be starting some online tele-therapy in September, as well as some face-to-face sessions where possible. Please feel free to message me here, call or email with any questions. Have a safe and sunny Summer!

Wow, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind and a steep learning curve haven’t they?! In my house we have been figuring out new ways of learning and using our brains, including playing the piano (Star Wars theme tune all day long! ), preparing meals (now everyone knows how to make meatballs from scratch) and finding that most things in nature can hit several areas of the curriculum. Did you know that cutting the top off a parsnip and putting it in water can work on scienc...e (how does it still grow?), math (how much has it grown and what is its rate of growth?), language (description of changes, documentation, etc), art (draw its various stages of growth) and life skills (hey, I can grow things to feed myself?!). Along with these discoveries comes the challenge of providing necessary supports to students via distance education. There are a lot of hurdles, but I think we are getting there. If there is anything you think I can help you with, speech-language or learning related, feel free to touch base and we can chat. Be safe!

Yes, I play all day. But it all has purpose! Motivation for getting through tiresome drills, expanding language in a child-led way, targeting grammar and sentence structure, or just supporting the development of essential play skills. We all learn better when we are having fun!
