Food for thought... I am so grateful for your support again this season!!! A very sincere thanks to everyone for the encouragement, and showing up to buy local no spray vegetables in spite of covid, the monsoons, limited openingsetc. ! This is a small venture, but it would be nothing without YOU!!!... The new location has presented some challenges during the last three years, but getting the cooler up and running this season has helped immensely. Many thanks to David and Roy for giving generously of their time and talents to make it happen! As covid made travel practically impossible this winter, l decided to continue sales into the fall and winter for the first time in the five years of doing this. The response has been encouraging to say the least. The carrots and potatoes are almost sold out, as there are only a few hundred pounds left. If you are interested in getting in on the last of this seasons produce please send a message, or text 250-640-1420. A friend sent this video, and l thought l should share it. Diet may only be a piece of the puzzle, but it certainly has a role to play in the quest for better health. Thanks again, and l hope to see you all next season. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mCbbilhn4dQ&feature=share
A huge thank you to everyone for their support this year. There are some carrots and potatoes left, please text 250-640-1420 if you are interested.
Food for thought...
Due to the weather there will be no more regular scheduled gate sales this season. There are several hundred pounds of beets and turnips, and lots of potatoes and carrots still available. Carrots, beets, and turnips are in 10 lb bags at $1.50/lb, and the potatoes are in 25lb sacks for $20. Please message me on here, or text 250-640-1420.... Thanks again to everyone!
For those who asked for some bulk produce, l will be there after 12:00 today. Please text me at 250-640-1420 to set it up if l have not replied.
The last of this year's beets.
The forecast is calling for cold weather this weekend, so the stand will not be open any longer this season. For those who are wanting to stock up there will be 25 lb. sacks of potatoes, along with 5,10 & 25 pound carrots and turnips available by appointment for the next week or two.
What a gorgeous day !!! It looks like the cold weather is coming, so it only feels right to say thanks for all your support! There is much to be thankful and grateful for, so all the best to you and your family this weekend!!!... Open 12-4 ish today.
Freshly harvested beets, carrots, turnips, and of course tons of potatoes! Doing up fries this weekend with Yukon gold potatoes, and they are delicious!!! Washed and sliced, ready for you to cook up any way you like!
Mmmmm, fresh fries!!!
I opened the gate just now to pick up a few carrots , and a newer white crossover drove up the driveway. To the driver; f**k you.
Many thanks to those who shared, very much appreciated !!!
Lots of freshly harvested beets, carrots, and literally a Tonne of potatoes!
The Yukon Gold potatoes have finished up beautifully!!! Harvesting if you are looking for casual work! By the twenty five pound sack for twenty bucks, starting tomorrow!
Thanks everyone, closed tomorrow.
A nice visit with Chewy, and he likes carrots!
The carrots have sized up nicely!!!
Wow, went through a LOT of beets this weekend, thanks for the support!
Looking for some casual help to finish up on the field.
The first cylindrical beets, Yukon Gold potatoes, and a few other things...
Thanks to everyone who dropped by this past weekend, it was great to see many familiar faces, and some new ones as well. Conversations with you often touched on the poor weather, difficulty with haying, and how prices for food have been increasing. Customer support and feedback has been encouraging, as prices need to increase here at the farm for it to remain viable. Most customers stated that while they enjoy lower prices, they understand that producing "no spray" vegetable...s requires considerably more physical labor, and they support a reasonable increase for fresh local produce grown without pesticides, herbicides, etc. Those comments guide the decisions regarding pricing, and long-term plans, such as staying away from the various farmers markets in order to give you better value for your dollars. Selling at the gate reduces costs for everyone. Last year the farm sold produce at the gate, directly to customers, with one or two exceptions; Matthew Quinn, who was the Executive Chef with the Compass Group, agreed to buy from the farm for the UNBC kitchen. It was a win-win, and they were great to deal with. Orders were placed every week or two for freshly harvested produce, and they paid as they went. This year there is a different group running things in the kitchen; Dana Hospitality LP, in Oakville Ontario, and they sent this regarding selling to UNBC this year; "Gateway will provide produce to Dana at our UNBC location under the following financial terms: 1. Purchases will be invoiced to UNBC 2. Payment is made by Dana Head Office in Oakville at a discounted rate of 7.5% of invoice price 3. Payment will be by Electronic transfer to Gateway's Bank within 30 days of invoice date 4. This agreement can be terminated by either party given 14 days notice. This financial agreement is confidential between Gateway and Dana Procurement and is not for discussion with or re negotiation by Dana representatives in BC." David Ervasti Director of Procurement Dana Hospitality LP 647.463.7392 In a nutshell, Dana Hospitality LP wants to skim off 7.5% of our invoices for themselves, referring to it as a "rebate" program. This is not a highly profitable business. It is more of a lifestyle choice. It is rewarding in other ways, but it does require inputs that need to be covered through sales for long term viability. Large businesses that try to squeeze more profit out of the efforts of small farms are contributing to food inflation, and affecting the viability of those small farmers. Local producers that played an important part in our economy have been forced to accept less, give more, or simply give up. The practice is not new, but it affects us all. Regrettably, Gateway Farms will not be supporting the "Rebate" program offered by Dana Hospitality LP, nor supplying produce to UNBC under those terms.
The first of the fresh beets, carrots, turnips, and potatoes!
Looking for some mature casual help for harvesting and sales, please call 250-640-1420 to inquire.
Hello everyone, if the weather cooperates for the harvesting, the stand will open this Saturday and Sunday, 12-5.
Well here it is, the weekend the veggies would normally be ready. This weather is making things challenging, but the recent heat has triggered some growth. The potatoes like the weather, and are flowering up nicely. The weeds seem to be loving it, so a sincere thank you to the girls who are helping keep them under control. I would like to ask for your input, given this covid situation. Are you comfortable buying from the roadside stand? Would you prefer an appointment to pick up your orders? I will be starting to harvest soon, and am looking forward to seeing everyone!
Won't be long...
