Another item from my collection- a silver letter E belt mount, probably 14-15th century. It looks to have been cast in a cuttle bone mould, like the medieval letter mount mould in the Museum of London. For more on cuttle casting, go to http://medievalwares.com/brooch%20manufa/Cast%20Brooch.html

I've just added some buckles and a strapend to my website, medieval and Norse. Most of them have findspot information.

Gaukler Medieval Wares 22.04.2021

This was just added to my collection. It's PAS NMS-259E87, https://finds.org.uk/database/search/results/q/NMS-259E87. It's a twelfth century zoomorphic strapend, with remains of enamel and strap. I'm pretty sure that I'll be making a version of it.

I've just bought a collection of Malian glass eye beads. Unusually, they have a bit of provenance- they were found near Djenné, and bought in Bamako circa 1977. These beads are usually described as Islamic. They were probably made between 800 and 1200AD. No one is quite sure where they were made- suggestions include Fustat, Egypt and somewhere in the Byzantine Empire. I don't want to have to individually photograph and describe each bead, so I'm going to offer them here first.... Prices will go up if I have to do the extra work to put them up on my website. I've split them into three groups: Best, Good, and The Rest. The Best will be USD55 each (I've seen similar go for more than $100), Good will be $40, and The Rest will be $15 each. For the first two types, if you describe the bead and its position in the photo, I'll send you the one (or more) that you want. for the Rest, I'll just pick one. See more

I have too many buttons in stock! The photos show only a sample. If you'd like to help with this problem, I'm willing to reduce prices by up to 50% (depending on size of purchase). Send me a message or email. "Nothing says Christmas like an antiquity or replica from Gaukler Medieval Wares."

I've posted fifteen items to http://medievalwares.com/index.php?main_page=products_new, including an Anglo-Saxon girdle hanger, a pair of Celtic bracelets, a Roman seal box lid with chicken decoration, a Rus lunula pendant, and a lead pencil.

Gaukler Medieval Wares 07.11.2020

I've just added more than fifty antiquities to my website. You can find them at http://medievalwares.com/index.php?main_page=products_new . They include two annular brooches with Marian inscriptions, lots of Byzantine silver bits, Rus rings, bells, a wonderful Anglo-Norse enameled brooch, and a silver lunula.

Many years ago, my wife and I were lucky enough to accompany some friends to the very cold office of John Cherry, Keeper of the Medieval Collection at the British Museum, to examine some medieval etuis (leather cases). Barbara opened one up to reveal this enigmatic object. It is made of wood, and seems to be textile related. By the case and its decoration, it is probably 15th century (wires and thread are modern. the central core seems to have spools in it, and threads into the strutted structure. No-one, including john Cherry knew what it was. Sorry about the photo quality- it was very dark. Dime for scale. Any suggestions? It must have been an expensive, high status object when made.

Here is a new buckle set, which can be found at http://medievalwares.com/index.php It's late 14C to early 15C, and is based on pieces in my collection. It fits a 2.5cm/1" belt. The buckle and strapend are related to the Lyre buckle style, probably the fanciest of the production buckles and strapends of this period. This style usually has cast, integral plates with engraving, as well as scrollwork done with a drill. The plates were either box-cast, or cast with three sides, and have a sheet metal back plate. Mine use the second method.

Midnight Madness Sale will be all day, Wednesday August 5. 20% off of everything on my website. If you buy a lot, I might do better than that. Try bargaining- you never know what I might agree to. If you are ordering a ring, check first that I have your size and preferred stone in stock. If you know what you want, and can't find it, please let me know- I might have it, or something similar. I have lots of antiquities that haven't made it to the site, and my website inventory is not always in agreement with the real world. Please share this to anyone you think might be interested. https://medievalwares.com

Today's new item is only new to my website; I've been making it for a while. The old one is new to me, though. 14th century ring shaped ring brooch, with a glass stone. http://medievalwares.com/index.php
