Asia Shahulhameed, our 2002 graduate from the Computer Programmer Analyst program, shared a story on receiving support for her academic journey and how she is giving back to the George Brown community: "As my daughter is gearing up for University this fall, we thought what better time than now to start this journey. My daughter has bagged Scholarships from every University she applied to, thanks to her strong academics and extracurricular activities. However, we recognize tha...t youths are trying to enter University and College with a Scholarship but didn't have the luxury of time to do the extracurriculars or achieve high academic standing due to various limitations. As a start, we are starting it with the college I attended, the college that helped me with a Scholarship for my studies in Computer Science. My father was a concierge; my mom was a housewife; I am one of their three daughters. My parents struggled as new immigrants, and I got married before I could finish Highschool due to cultural pressure. That was life. Thanks to the kindness of George Brown College, I was offered a generous Scholarship that helped me complete my computer studies. It is, in a way - a heartfelt Thank You to George Brown College. The Asia Shahulhameed and Mohamed Rafi Scholarship will be presented to a full-time domestic student from the BIPOC Community entering the Centre for Arts and Design and Information Technology at George Brown College School of Computer Studies. We are building more Scholarships with local community organizations and India to support Educational Institutions in rural India that offer help to those in financial need. Giving back has been very important to my husband and me, and now I see that in my daughter. When kids see that you are giving back, they adopt the same mindset, and it is so true from my own experience. That is my story, and I hope this inspires others to give as well.
