Why Peggy Hikes ..... I am hiking for Hospice in gratitude and in memory of my Mom. She had the privilege of receiving hospice care at Chapman House during her final days , and our entire family will forever remember the kindness and compassion our entire family witnessed and experienced. Our first Mother’s Day without her brings us all many memories and reminds us of the amazing impact she had on our entire family’s lives. We are so grateful that we had her in our presence for 100 years, and feel so blessed that hospice was able to offer her the dignity and care we all deserve at end of life.

A beautiful write up about why Susanne Campbell Milne Hikes for Hospice : Shortly after losing my Mom last year, the global pandemic hit, then BLM protests began and Trump was out of control. It felt like the world around me was starting to implode. I hadn’t gone for a run in several years but suddenly felt urge to. I didn’t know where I was going. I just walked out the door and started running. I ran, and I cried. I hit 5kms (my farthest) but kept on going. By the time I ha...d hit 10kms I was out of steam, so I dried my tears and started to walk back home. I became more aware of my surroundings on my way. The sun was shining. The birds were chirping, the promise of spring was in the air and the country backroad was still and quiet. I felt a sense of peace and gratitude wash over me and I smiled and soaked it all in, feeling a sense of hope again. Running, walking and hiking has become my therapy. I feel a strong connection to my Mom and grounded with the sun on my face and the wind at my back. I can’t think of a better way to spend mental health awareness month. So, I will follow my big brother’s lead and honour my Mom this Mother’s Day by and raising money for Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce Inc. I am so thankful for the care and compassion my Mom, Anne McColgan-Campbell and our family received during her short time there. I will post my progress each day in my story. Please sponsor me if you can. They need our support.

From the desk of Sunny I don’t always get to come to work with my mom, but when I do I seem to make all the humans very happy. Today I just knew that I needed to go to this one room. The resident has a Chocolate Lab at home and I brought a smile to her loved ones faces just sitting by her bed and licking her hand. I’m still learning to resist temptation. For example, my mom wasn’t very happy when I smelled toast in the garbage and tried to help myself. The humans all l...aughed and told my mom You’ll never train that out of a Lab. I’m so glad my visits make a difference. Until next time, Sunny See more

Human connection, it is what life is all about. Over the past number of months we've seen people making connections in so many new and unique ways. No matter if the gesture is big or small reach out this weekend. Make a phone call, video call, text, mail a letter, draw/paint a picture or maybe even make a video for someone you love to put a smile on their face. It will make both you and the recipients feel so good!... Earlier this week the grandson of one of our hospice residents emailed our staff this video he made for his Nana. Obviously when we showed her she absolutely loved it. It was such a beautiful and unique way he could show his love for her from afar. Sean thank you for allowing us to share your talents with the whole community and inspiring us! https://vimeo.com/499020576

We are so grateful to our friends at the Bluewater Quilters Guild who gifted us this beautiful new quilt this holiday season to use for our honour guard services. Each and every resident who comes to live with us at Chapman House receives a dignified exit through our front door adorned in the comfort of a beautiful quilt. Depending on the wishes of the individual they are also often surrounded by a gathering of caring staff, volunteers, family & friends for a moment of quiet reflection or a song.

Christmas is certainly different for everyone this year. Thankfully the patio doors in each of our resident suites and our new extended walkway ensures visits with G.G.-Pa and other hospice residents can still happen, even through a global pandemic. Thank you to our incredible community for supporting us through this difficult year and ensuring moments like these are still possible.

"On June 17, 2017 we lost a dear friend Jiim Niesen to cancer. For the last few years we have held a golf tournament in his honour. This tournament allows Jim's family and friends to get together in Walkerton for some laughter, friendly competition but most importantly a day to remember Jim. We decided to raise money at the golf tournament so that we could donate to a local charity. When we heard of the new construction of a Bruce County Hospice we knew this was the ideal place to donate the money in Jim's name. The hospice will be local to Jim's family and will serve those who are ill in their time of need. We know that the new hospice is an important addition to the Walkerton area."
