The Ward 8 councillor’s proposal, which he said is backed by Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Coun. Gian-Carlo Carra and Coun. George Chahal, comes after protests against police brutality across North America and calls to defund police services, including in Calgary. Advocates of defunding say the money should instead go toward mental health services, housing, transit and other community supports. The motion also asks for the city to develop a community safety investment framework in collaboration with CPS, supported by the reallocated funds. These funds are being collected to build safe, affordable housing for seniors who wish to age in place.
