Still Using Windows XP? Stop It! Most people said goodbye to Windows XP a long time ago. But if, for whatever reason, you're still running the out-of-date operating system, you really need to upgrade. Microsoft on Tuesday finally stopped providing antimalware signatures for Windows XP. PCs running Windows XP have not been truly protected for more than a year. Microsoft on April 8, 2014 officially ended support for XP, meaning it stopped rolling out security updates for the a...ging OS. At that time, Redmond also stopped letting those on Windows XP download its Security Essentials tool, which guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. The software giant did, however, throw a bone to XP users who already had Microsoft Security Essentials installed, promising to keep it updated for a "limited time" to give people some more time to transition to a newer and fully supported OS. That time has now come and gone How to Get and Install Windows 10 On Tuesday, Microsoft officially stopped providing updates to Microsoft Security Essentials for XP. Worse yet, XP users can no longer use Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal tool, so if your PC gets infected with malware and it probably will you're on your own. For the tech-savvy, this is a non-issue. You've said goodbye to XP, which first launched in 2001, and embraced a more modern OS, like Windows 7 or Windows 8. Microsoft has been pleading with customers to upgrade to a new OS for years, so you can't say you weren't warned about this. If you're still on XP, perhaps now is a good time to finally upgrade. Windows 10 arrives on July 29.

Apps that stop overages, save data while traveling When you travel abroad, data caps become a painful fact of life. If you want high-speed data, you have to pay by the megabyte. That makes measuring and controlling your data usage extra important when you're out of the country. Fortunately, there are apps that let you measure and save data better than the standard settings built into your phone, which can lag behind your actual data usage.... Save Data with Opera Max Available for almost all Android phones, it counts data usage in real time, lets you turn off individual apps, and compresses data through Opera's servers to minimize your roaming data usage. Opera Max is best if you do a lot of Web browsing and social media posts on your trip. Email doesn't use a lot of data anyway and Opera Max doesn't compress maps. But Opera Max isn't available for iPhones, so you should use Onavo Extend to compress your data there. Measure Data with Roamy If you don't want to compress your data, the Android app Roamy provides a very granular way to control your data usage. Roamy also directs access through its own servers, which lets you set data limits for individual apps and turn them on and off one by one. You can set Roamy to cut you off when you hit your cap, so you don't end up being charged overages. If you’re Paranoid, Onavo Opera Max and Roamy each have one major downside for some people: to work properly, they filter all of your data through their servers. It assures you of your privacy and all that, but for some users that may be a bridge too far. Onavo Count lets you count your data application by application without opening a VPN connection. You lose the ability to control your data usage, though. Count is a pure data counterit doesn't let you turn off applications or manage data limits. You'll have to do that through your phone's OS settings panel (where you can usually set an alert and cut-off point for data usage.) Onavo Count is available for iPhones and Android phones.

7 Signs you've got Malware Computers are complicated enough that they don't always do precisely what we expect. Sometimes an unexpected behavior is just a fluke; other times, it's an outward and visible sign of an inward and terrible malware infestation. If you notice any of these security warning signs, your system may well be compromised. Popup ads appear even when no browser is open. While not as common as they used to be, adware programs bombard their victims with adverti...sements. Sometimes they're ads for legitimate products, other times they contain links to malicious websites, sites that will attempt to drop more malware on your PC. Browser navigation gets redirected. Not every site redirect is malicious, but if you find that trying to reach Google takes you to an unfamiliar search site, you've almost certainly got a problem. Sometimes the redirection is more subtle. A security program you never installed pops up scary warnings. Creating and distributing fake antivirus programs is a lucrative business. The perpetrators use drive-by downloads or other sneaky techniques to get the fake antivirus onto your system, then display scary warnings about made-up threats. Naturally you have to register a payment before the fraudulent tool will "fix" the problem. Posts you didn't write appear on your social media pages. Malware focused on Facebook and other social media sites propagates by generating fake posts. A program holds your PC for ransom. Some malware programs literally hold your PC or data for ransom. Overt ransomware threats may encrypt all your pictures and documents and demand that you pay to get them back. Others try to obscure what they're doing. Suddenly you can't use common system tools. A smart user, suspecting the presence of malware, might launch Task Manager to investigate, or check settings using Registry Editor. If you suddenly find that trying to use these or other system tools triggers a message saying your Administrator has disabled them, it may well be an attempt at self-defense by malware on your system. Everything seems perfectly normal. That's right. Some types of malware do their best to hide all activity, leaving no visible traces. Even when you don't notice anything unusual, it's possible that a 'bot on your system may be quietly awaiting instruction from its command and control system, or a Remote Access Trojan may be harvesting your personal information.
