Roads to Freedom Revised Working with partners in the community, the Greater Essex County District School Board has revised its high school African Canadian Roads to Freedom resource. It was first compiled in 2007 and updated in 2011. The new version includes the latest documented information and additional stories about the significant contributions that local Canadians of African descent have made to the Windsor-Essex region and across the country. The launch, held at W.F. ...Herman Secondary School, was a celebration of Black culture through music, dance and the spoken word. Mysteria Bayliss-Harris (pictured, right), a Grade 12 student at Walkerville Collegiate Institute read her original poem, "The Spoken Word" and was joined by Ethan Lovell, who is in Grade 11 at WCI, for spiritual, jazz and Motown music. Irene Moore Davis (pictured, below), from the Essex County Black Historical Research Society spoke of the need to continually update and upgrade historical resources such as Roads to Freedom, to provide "a Roads to Freedom 4.JPGmuch deeper and richer experience for the students". Superintendent Clara Howitt directed her message to the Principals and teachers from each of the GECDSB's 15 high schools in attendance, for them to make use of this important, locally developed resource throughout each year. Roads to Freedom is specifically intended for use in the Grade 10 Canadian History and Grade 10 Civics courses but can be connected to many areas of study. Measuring Interest in I.B. The Greater Essex County District School Board has prepared a brief survey to gauge the interest in adding the International Baccalaureate Programme to its program offerings. "We are continuously exploring additional opportunities to enhance student learning," says GECDSB Director of Education Erin Kelly. ... The I.B. Programme is internationally recognized. It provides, "unique academic rigour"...that can "lead (students) to some of the highest ranking universities around the world." (Source - www.ibo.org) Parents are being asked to respond to the questions at the link: 2015 IB Survey which is on the Board's website, www.publicboard.ca. The survey will be available until March 2nd. The Board will review the input and make a decision whether to carry on to the next step in the process that could potentially bring the International Baccalaureate Programme to the GECDSB.
