Stage 2 re-launch What to expect when you come in for your massage: -Ring the doorbell upon your arrival no more than 5 minutes before your appointment. If youre a new client, 10 minutes is good. ... - I will let you in and ask you immediately to either wash your hands in the bathroom or use hand sanitizer - Please only bring the necessities to your appointment. Phones, purses and water bottles will be sanitized as soon as you arrive. Please leave your coats in your vehicle. - Please do not come if you are feeling unwell. Cancellation fees will be waived if 24 hours notice is given. - Everything will be sanitized between clients. I now have 30 minutes between each appointment to accommodate for this. - Please respect the client after you and leave in a timely manner. - I will be wearing a mask the whole time with you. It is only recommended that you wear a mask, but not necessary. As we get closer to relaunch, I will outline the requirements for your appointment and Im very happy to say, its not that bad at all. As some of you may know, Im moving soon, but my business will remain in Leduc. With that being said, Ive adjusted my hours and days that I work. Please keep that in mind when you book. Dear Members, Another week has passed with our industry shuttered. Thankfully, the measures taken by the Alberta Government and the Chief Medical Officer of Hea...lth (CMOH) with respect to social distancing and the closure of non-essential businesses appear to be working. For each of the past two days, Alberta has reported less than 50 new cases of COVID-19 respectively, and the hospitalization and ICU numbers are continuing to drop. If this trend continues, we may be on track for Stage 2 of the re-launch plan previously indicated to happen around June 19th. There are many things we need to consider when preparing to start practicing again. Although the MTAA has not yet released its return to practice guidelines (we are awaiting final approval from Alberta Health), there is no shortage of information available to start forming decisions on what you can do to protect yourself and your patients. A document, directly from the CMOH: Record of Decision CMOH Order 16-2020, specifically Appendix A - Workplace Guidance for Community Health Care Settings, lays out the framework for non-essential healthcare workers and the rules they must follow when returning to practice. The top four active measures listed in that document, in order, are: 1) Screening for COVID-19 2) Proper hygiene handwashing, coughing etiquette 3) Proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures 4) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) With regards to PPE, it is important to note that the Alberta Government, specifically for non-essential healthcare workers who are treating patients that are NOT SUSPECTED to have COVID-19, the appropriate PPE is as follows: All staff providing direct client/patient care or working in client/patient care areas must wear a surgical/procedure mask continuously, at all times and in all areas of the workplace if they are either involved in direct client/patient contact or cannot maintain adequate physical distancing (2 metres) from client/patient and co-workers. This is the only form of PPE that is mentioned for healthcare providers who are providing care to screened healthy individuals. Alberta Health emphasizes in their document the need to conduct proper screening, cleaning, and hygiene as our primary lines of defence against COVID-19, not expensive PPE. For those who are anxious about re-opening and want to start preparing, you may want to consider the following: Look at your treatment space and plan how to allow for 2 meter physical distancing whenever possible (reception area, patient interview, homecare instruction) Create a list of all high touch and common touch surfaces that will need routine cleaning and disinfecting. Think about your schedule. Do you need to alter the amount of time between your appointments to allow for physical distancing between patients and proper sanitization of your treatment space? (There is no correct amount of time. You need to make the best decision for your practice, factoring in your treatment environment, your sanitization products, your size of clinic space etc.) Ensure an adequate amount of hygiene supplies: hand soap / hand sanitizer, towels, etc. Ensure all soft surfaces are able to be disinfected (pillows have vinyl covers, tables are not ripped, thermophores have vinyl covers etc.) This list of ideas is by no means complete nor is it meant to be a substitute for an official return to practice guideline. However, I personally hate waiting and I believe these are some helpful ideas for the general things we will need to think about prior to re-opening. The MTAA Board of Directors and MTAA Staff are continuing to consult with the government and healthcare regulatory bodies to ensure that our members will have all the information they require to return to practice in a safe, confident and timely manner. So I have a little time on my hands and I wanted to share a story about importance of massage therapy in trauma recovery. . . . This is my daughter. Back in October during a rugby contact assessment drill (she was at a high school devoted for sports and athletes) she was caught off guard, got tackled, flew to the ground backwards and hit her head. She sustained whiplash and a severe concussion that took her permanently out of contact sports. That is a different story and she...s still working on the recovery from the concussion. You can DM me if youd like to know more about that. What these photos show are a few things. When I finally got her on my table to start physical treatments, I asked her if she felt normal. At that point I had to take a photo. The first photo alarmed me. This is what normal felt like to her. In fact her entire right side of her upper back was so extremely hypertonic and spasmodic. No wonder my girl was in so much pain. Initial palpitations and visual assessment revealed a lot of this, but wasnt fully visible until her body was able to relax in the prone position. Cervical ROM was drastically decreased in all ranges. I go on to treat her using light pressure as her pain tolerance was incredibly low. I was able to work on her for 45 minutes focusing on upper and mid traps with cupping, scalenes, levator scapula, the shoulder girdles, sub occiptials, SCM, and splenuis cervicis. The second photo shows just how much of the hypertonicity was decreased. Obviously this one treatment wasnt enough and she followed up with contrast hydro of heat and ice for a few days following as well as regular visits with her chiropractor. Soft tissue damage has a long recovery plan, BUT there is hope for an increase of ROM and a decrease of pain. It just takes time and willingness of each client. As I sit and reflect this evening, I find myself vulnerable to fear. The unknown is scary, but I have trust. I wanted to take a moment to thank every one of my clients. Youve been with me as I grown as a therapist and my hope is that you will come back to me once we can resume our day to day lives. You are important to me and I needed you to know that.

Foam rolling....great for your legs, glutes and back. If your budget doesnt allow you to get a foam roller, go to a hardware store and pick up a piece of PVC pipe. Its a fraction of the cost, but remember theres no fancy foam to soften the intensity. ... . . . Lacrosse ball rolling...my clients have heard me over and over agin talk about this. Put the lacrosse ball in a tube sock to reduce the chance of it rolling away for more control. Attached is a quick guide for you. Lacrosse ball massage is great for all areas...shoulders, back, chest, calves (you get the point). I promise you, well get through this. I am not alone in the situation, which offers some comfort, but with great sadness, I need to join the army of Albertans and Canadians to keep us healthy. Effective immediately until April 1st, I will no longer be seeing clients.
