GRAHAM GILLMORE THE END OF ELOQUENCE Opening: Sept. 17 Artist in attendance, 5- 8 pm Gallery Hours: Wed. - Sat. 12-5 pm ... The gallery maintains COVID-19 protocols. Please wear a mask and maintain social distance. Private viewings are available by appointment. [email protected] We are pleased to present The End of Eloquence, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by iconic Canadian artist Graham Gillmore. The paintings in the exhibition were created in Gillmore’s Winlaw, BC studio, nestled in the Slocan Valley region of the West Kootenay Mountains. Known for his seductively vibrant paintings interspersed with provocative phrases, Gillmore’s recent work comments on the slippery intricacies of personal and cultural communication. His use of suggestive text fragments and satirical word play draw attention to the indeterminacy of language. By engraving these poetic fragments into sleek layers of enamelled surfaces, Gillmore underscores the fluid and unsettled vagaries of our interpersonal exchanges. His work maintains a tenuous balance between sarcasm and sincerity, clarity and confusion, intimacy and distance. Gillmore lived in New York for over 25 years and has positioned himself internationally. His reputation extends across Canada, the United States and in Europe with recent exhibitions held in Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico City, San Francisco, New York, Miami Beach, Madrid and Berlin. Earlier exhibitions include Learn to Read at the TATE Modern alongside John Baldessari and Carol Bove. His work is collected by the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Audain Art Museum, British Columbia; the Ghent Museum, Belgium; Gian Enzo Sperone, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Toronto; RCA Records, New York; The Royal Bank of Canada; The Bank of Montreal; The Vancouver Art Gallery; and numerous other institutions and private collections worldwide. He has been featured in publications such as Canadian Art, Border Crossings, W Magazine, Art News, ArtForum, L.A. Weekly, C Magazine, and the New York Times Magazine. REMINDER // JOE FLEMING: SILVER HARLEY exhibition closes on Saturday (July 20) - https://mailchi.mp/generalhardware/8g502aso6n-885781
OPENING TONIGHT Joe Fleming: Silver Harley THURS. JUNE 13, 5-8, all welcome . .... Fleming’s new series, Silver Harley, grapples with figuration and abstraction. Found animated drawings are torn, deconstructed and morphed into fantastical images with a social and political narrative at a time when our beliefs and values are being challenged daily. Hand and machine are employed and mark making happens on both sides of the transparent surface, creating a play between figure and ground in a modernist way. Light travels through the surfaces casting shadows and involving the wall in the experience. Joe Fleming has exhibited internationally for over 20 years with solo exhibitions in Singapore, Malaysia, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and New York City. He has lectured at universities in Canada, the United States and South East Asia since 1993. His paintings are included in many public and private collections such as: BMO Financial Group, Trimark Mutual Funds, Honeywell Bull, Prince Waterhouse Coopers (Malaysia), HSBC Bank, A.T. Tolley Collection, Australian High Commission, Canadian High Commission (Kuala Lumpur), the Art Gallery of Edmonton, the Museum of Civilization (Hull, Quebec) and the Holocaust Museum (LA). Fleming has exhibited in numerous international art fairs: Art Stage (Singapore), FIAC (Paris), Arte Cologne (Germany), Scope (New York and Miami), Papier (Montreal) and TIAF (Toronto). He has received recognition for his work in Carte Blanche 2: Painting a survey of new Canadian painting (The Magenta Foundation), 60 Painters in Canada, The Artist’s Studio @jhartmanphoto , American Illustration, Imago Mundi, Design Lines Magazine, Azure Magazine, The Globe and Mail, Now Magazine, CBC, Chelsea Now and The Wall Street Journal Magazine. Fleming lives and works in Toronto, Canada. .
