ARE YOU READY TO PAINT YOUR FRONT DOOR!!!!!!! I found this in my files. A presentation that I gave to at Humber College to my students. Thought you might enjoy the information about COLOUR! I also hope this will inspire you to never give up your dreams. "Hello, I’m Margo Young, a certified interior decorator, honours graduate of Humber College and member of the Canadian Decorating Association (CDECA) and Education Ambassador for CDECA13. I knew I wanted to be an interior decorator when I was 13 years old. I have taken several detours to get here, but I am here to inspire you to live your dream. Let’s start with the basics. You will use colour in every aspect of your design projects, big or little, one piece at a time or a whole picture. Colour inspires and is also a glue. It’s the alpha and omega. I want to give you a brief overview of the learning outcome for this course. Colour Theory and Design includes an introduction to basic colour theory systems My first two questions for my clients are always, what do you want the space to feel like? And What primary function will the room serve? Colour will play a key role in these determinations. Thinking about the atmosphere you wish to create is an important element in choosing the best colour schemes for your clients’ space. You will have to recognize the value of the "basics", and that there is more to colour than meets the eye. Then, begin exploring the colourful world around you and translate that to your clients. The value of learning the basics is to have a strong foundation of knowledge. Colour is not only absorbed through vision, but also through the skin. Therefore, colour affects everyone! Believe it or not, even the blind sense they are affected by colour. Colour can change the shape, mood, temperature and stimulus or size of a room. Certainly colour can have a strong visual impact, but are you aware that the power of colour goes beyond what your eyes can see? Colour reaches deep into our hearts and minds, evoking strong, emotional connections that produce an almost instantaneous reaction. Understanding all of the ways different hues tap into our emotions could fill volumes; but understanding the general responses we have based on research, historical significance and word association studies, can give you a good taste of this thought provoking aspect of colour. Let’s play a colour game to warm up to colour!!!! (have the students choose their favourite colour from the colour samples and then discuss the psychological meaning the colours. ) Colour associations Blue comfort, loyalty, calm, security, harmonious Red aggressive, strong, sexy, impulsive, athletic Yellow Caution, look toward future, new, modern, intellectual Green Tranquility, security, balance, persistence, sensitive, frank Orange Warmth, exciting, energy, creative, extrovert, social, Violet-power,religious,sensitive,observant,tempermental,artistic, White-delicate,refined,happy,perfection,enlightenment,peace,purity Black-power colour, dignity, sophistication, can be oppressive Pink-soft, healthy childlike, feminine WHAT IS COLOUR? EVERYTHING YOU SEE IS COLOUR. TWO DIFFERENT ASPECTS COLOUR & TONE. TONE IS ABOUT PERSPECTIVE Show colour wheel and discuss the background. COLOUR IS RELATIVE TO ASSOCIATION RELATED TO EMOTIONAL IMPACT Colour is the result of light hitting an object. The colour wheel is an image of the spectrum bent into a circle. We will explore the colour wheel, colour harmony and the colours of the rainbow throughout this course . You will create a colour wheel as one of your projects to become fully familiar with the colour associations. Colour can define a space. Colours are commonly associated with a psychological temperature and are divided into warm and cool categories. Reds, oranges and yellows are warm while blues, greens and violets are cool. THERE ARE 3 DIMENSIONS TO COLOUR HUE e.g. red and blue primary BRIGHTNESS OR VALUE amount of white or black SATURATION OR CHROMA amount of grey-black and white WE CAN SEE 10 MILLION VARIATIONS OF 3 PRIMARY COLOURS OF RED, BLUE AND YELLOW ALL COLOURS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF NEUTRAL GREY WILL MAKE AN IMPRESSION ON PEOPLE. They WILL REACT TO SOME COLOURS IN A POSITIVE WAY AND OTHERS IN A NEGATIVE WAY. THEY WILL NEVER REACT INDIFFERENTLY. NOT ALL COLOURS AFFECT ALL PEOPLE IN THE SAME WAY. THE ONES THAT DO ARE CALLED OBJECTIVE COLOURS. The entire spectrum of colours is derived from light. Light flows from our eyes and triggers hormone production, which influences our entire complex biochemical system. With most colours, people will behave in a predictable way. This is called a predictable response. For example, red always stimulates your appetite while blue will always diminish your appetite. If you want to lose weight, try eating off a blue plate on a blue tablecloth! Light is the only travelling energy that we can see in the form of colours. Recognize The Powerful Role That Color Plays In Your Life Each And Every Day From traffic lights, to product branding, to how we describe our emotional state; color has an amazing ability to communicate without ever having to say a word. It is important that the colours we wear, and the colours we use in our home and business have a positive affect, on us and the people we associate with. Who determines colour trends? A not-for-profit international organization called Colour Marketing Group, meets at two international Conferences each year where they forecast Colour Directions and trends and combinations, design influences and merchandising for all industries, manufactured products and services. Their major focus is to identify the direction of colour and design trends. Colours are inter-industry related. As such, one industry influences another, causing colour to be dynamic. That is why colour trends are common in the fashion, automotive, decorating and interior fashion and other related industries at the same time. Restrictions on colour combinations have been tossed out but, there are some basic rules that you can follow if you are unsure of your instincts. We will explore colour so that you will become comfortable. Some of you can already just tune into that little voice in your head and decide if you find the combination of colours pleasing or not. For others, it is a little more difficult. Cultural diversity today has also opened up new colour horizons. Your role as an interior decorator will be to assist and educate your clients to make colour selections that they will love to live with in any environment. Studying colour theory will help you understand how bringing in just the right third colour can make these dynamic combinations even more interesting or why complimentary colour combinations such as red/green or blue/orange naturally draw the eye. Never stop learning about this endlessly fascinating subject. The great thing about color is that no matter how much you know, there will always be something new to discover. An awareness of why the colors on a box may make you pick one product over another at the grocery store, even how come that house on the end of your street always catches your eye (ahh, it’s that perfect shade of red paired against its complimentary sage green of the siding that gives the front door such visual impact!- see you’re already a color genius!!!) For me this is when the fun of color really begins." YOUR COMMENTS ARE SOOOO WELCOME!
