Sometimes who gets what to ride around here doesn’t quite add up! Like here for instance...I’m on the long and tall of it, and Miles is on the short and sweet of it. And yes, the stool in the foreground is how I managed to climb up on Duke here...for the first time. What a mind on this colt! #Bar5SQuarterhorses

Pez, my ‘covid colt’...first time going to the horn on all three barrels, just trusting him to work, no babysitting! Couple things to work on, but I think he’s figuring this game out...and loving it! #RunTheShine #canchaser #40horses

Playing in the roping pen on my ‘covid colt’, Pez. This is how I prefer to pattern my barrel horses! just get them broke and don’t let them get bored I figure. #RunTheShine #40horses

When Mother Nature is feeling cold backed every morning, and I'm reluctantly crawling out of the house to face her wicked and wild (and ill-bred) ways. And I'm feeling under appreciated and over worked and once again the waterer out back is frozen up and every horse on the place is staring at me with needy eyes. Just when I think she is a cull pen, no good, wicked hearted, bog spavined old nag...Mother Nature paints us a sunrise like this.

I moved ole Slick Foot Frank across the chute to the head side yesterday...I think he liked it over there! This 10 year old gelding has come a long way. Who say...s you can't teach an old dog new tricks! (P.S it was -23 here yesterday and we just kept going...and no, it isn't hard on the animals! it isn't even that hard on us. ) See more

Yesterday afternoon while I was doing chores, all the horses were celebrating the cold weather () in true equine fashion and I was attempting to get some pictures of their shenanigans. As I moved along the fence snapping pictures this little red mare kept pace with me, I’m sure purposefully staying in frame... #slippers #somegirlsaresupermodels

A Cow Called Freaky... By Genie Lynch Once upon a time there was a particularly difficult cow and she happened to wear our brand and live in our pasture with our other cows. We never really laid claim to her though, we just kind of rode around her...like way around her...trying to avoid pressuring her in any way, shape or form. She was one of those critters after all, that was real easy to stir up, and if she caught a sniff of a fart in the wind she would either turn tai...Continue reading

Cowing up the champ... Free Thought (aka Eddie) doesn't mind chasing around behind the backside of a critter at all. Like most race horses, be they Quarter horses or Thoroughbreds, he's like, "Just show me the job, dude." #freethought #justplainclassy

On days like today ( at -22) I am thankful to have a place under a roof with good sand to work horses, plus a warm barn to put them up in when we’ve finished our day. I remember a lot of years making a living this way, when I had neither...oh how times have changed. Still, I am hoping for spring around the corner, my favourite time of year. #40horses #30someyearsandcounting

Well, we hardly ever buy mares...you know, sale horses have to be geldings to sell for the big money...blah, blah, blah...but I have been pursuing this little mare for a while now and I am beyond excited to start this journey with her! This little girl was born and bred to be a super star just like her brother Smarty. Welcome to the 40 horses ‘Slippers’...this is going to be a memorable ride! Thank you Vernon & Jeanne Lauck for this opportunity, I promise many future updates.

Babies are home!! (now to think of names...as my friend Shelby pointed out we've had so many horses over the years its hard not to recycle nick names.)

Who says I haven't retired to a rocking chair yet?? Look at these two four year olds of ours! Life in the saddle on these two young geldings is like riding the swing on the front deck on a warm summer evening sipping a cold beer... #peznsinner #40horses

How Old Am I... The other day I'm climbing on my stool so that I can reach the stirrup on this 15'3 hand high gelding, because I'm wearing so many clothes due to our lovely Alberta winter that I can't lift my foot that high. Plus, my old body has taken one or two beat downs over the years and my sciatica bothers me a little now and again. So now all my saddle horses get stool broke; even Slick Foot Frank and he's only 14'3 even on his most arrogant day! Anyway, so ...there I am, literally crawling up on this big gelding, and I can tell that he's feeling a bit froggy. I pause and think well perhaps I should take a minute or two to lunge him around me, warm up his want to a bit, get his feet working for me instead of against me, but then I thought, and I quote; "Nah...what's the worst that can happen?" So there I am, in the middle of 1300 lbs of good feeling equine, and he's got more wind in his belly than he knows what to do with and he's picking his feet up so light he's barely touching the ground with the rollers going in his nostrils. And I know in my gut that I've bit off more than I can chew if anything at all goes wrong. Do I step off though? Nope. I think to myself that I'll just ride him with my hand close to the horn until I get a sweat on him...I mean, I know this horse and he's a good one, he's half broke, what could possibly go wrong? Well, as it turns out, quite a few things apparently. There we are, me and old Five Minutes To Midnight long trotting across the far pasture headed for the green zone, when suddenly my legs were wrapped around a rocket launcher. I knew what was going on, having been there a few times over the years, and I rolled my spurs in for purchase (simply instinct) and went for the saddle horn. I was determined to stick because I hate walking when there is a perfectly good horse around, let me tell you, but this big horse had some moves that my old body didn't follow and I cart wheeled through the air, turning over twice before I hit the ground. I stood up in the same instant I landed and watched that gelding stick his tail in the air like a victory flag and wave it at me as he hauled freight in the direction of home. And there I was left walking. I couldn't even be mad. It was my own fault, I'd gotten careless and this job doesn't condone carelessness. As I made that walk though I had time to ask myself..."How old are you?" As I berated myself with this question, feeling pretty angry for having made this green horn mistake, I realized the answer was that I was just old enough to know better, but still young enough to do it anyway. That change of perspective made that walk a heck of a lot easier to take. See more

Colt problems #101; There I am, thrashing around through the willows thick as the hair on a dogs back, trying to undo a barbed wire gate with an extremely impatient red roan gelding (known by the unforgettable name of Sherman T Potter ) standing behind me, nudging and coaxing me to hurry. Finally, with a huff of breath like an impatient husband, Sherman pushed right by me, intent on finishing the job it was obvious to him was going to take his manly abilities to accomp...lish. Step aside woman! Quit your fiddle farting around battling such things as these measly willows! Allow me to show you how to push bush as only a red roan stallion...uh, gelding, can... Aaand...yup, nope, he didnt see that barbed wire gate there. Walked right into it hard enough to bounce him back on his hocks. Well, Sherman T Potter, are you feeling humble yet? Befuddled by a woman and a barbed wire gate. Ole roanie hung his head for shame after that, but not a pin prick on anything but his pride! See more

The Old Rope Horse He takes up a stance at the gate to watch, having left the herd grazing in the field... And I wonder as I see him there, if he grieves the work time has made him yield. Does he resent the black that took his place, despise the chestnut and hate the grey?... Does he wish he may and wish he might, recapture his youth of yesterday... Does he wonder if I remember him and our partnership run for run... The shots he gave me despite myself, and the buckle winning steers he spun. No, he simply comes up to drink, and perhaps lick a little salt, He doesnt waste his life, lamenting life, and trying to find fault... It is the way of nature this passing of precious time, Perhaps it feels unfair now and then, but its a universal crime. That old rope horse has got things figured, that takes us humans years of thought, And universities full of scholars and all the education that can be bought. Hes figured out that life isnt here to question...acceptance is truly not so hard, Not all things need to be in our control, against somethings we cannot guard. Our bodies are temporary vessels, they were never meant to last... they get sore and broken and so tired, they simply cant heal up as fast. And when in the natural progression of things, the world turns to us less, Take it with some grace and calmness, knowing full well you have earned the rest. The End Genie Lynch

This place we call home is nothing fancy, in fact I cuss it every other day when its raining and Im slopping through mud to the tops of my boots, but when the sun is coming up and Im headed off to work sometimes I feel a little bit proud to live here. Every inch of this place has been built on hard work and horse training. And every colt I step up on is paying the mortgage... Our piece of heaven right here. #heavenwhenitaintraining #alifebuiltonthebackofahorse

The average payout for the #10 (70% back to the ropers); thanks to all who entered! We had 93 teams, good weather, good attitudes, and strong cattle...what more can a bunch of team roping enthusiasts ask for?

Pushin' Forty Horse Training 16.07.2020

Wow...that is all I have to say after what feels like a long weekend of roping, running steers, wrapping steers, worrying that our friends and competitors have the best chance possible to make some money. Wow and thanks! All you guys who go out of your way to support us in our attempts to bring a little team roping action to our close knit community are so appreciated. You all completely rock!! Thank you so much for your support. You cannot imagine how much each one of you has made our world out here at Pushin Forty a little brighter! Putting on these ropings has been a big endeavour on our part, as we are completely unfamiliar with all the ins and outs of being roping producers () and you all who participated made it pretty painless. Thank you from the bottoms of our hearts and I promise next year we will do a little better!!

Attention!! Please vaccinate your horses before coming to us for training! It costs very little and it helps prevent your horse from getting the baby snots when they come for training. I do not mean to be difficult to deal with, but from now on if your horse has to stay into the following month simply because we had to give them time off due to contracting a very preventative illness, there will be an extra charge for the extended board. Thanks for your understanding.

This colt we call Monster hasnt learned to take the slack out of a rope yet (he has pretty much taken the slack out of everything else around the place at one time or another, including all of us! ) but he has come so far that I can dam sure give him the time to figure that one out without spurring his guts out! Someday Im going to back off riding so many colts, and Im going to write a book...and there will be a few stories featuring Monster, I will guarantee it. Its those gentle, sleepy eyed ones, folks, take it from me...you cant trust a buckskin with a low swirl and a sense of humour. Thanks for the pictures Gloria, you immortalized my Monster!

Respect Your Trainer...theyre out there working on your horse in the mud and the rain, the heat and the horse flies. Theyve learned things about your horse that you will never know, because they were the first to step up, to open the round pen gate, or the first to push for the lope, or pick up and swing a rope. Respect your trainer, because they chose this life, in some cases with out truly knowing what was driving them...it was just a passion to swing their leg over as ma...ny horses in this lifetime as was humanly possible. To feel, to learn, to touch, to experience horses on a level most people just dont get. Respect your trainer...dont say things like, Id do it myself, but I cant afford to get hurt. Ive always started my own horses, but this one needs consistency. A couple of rides, thats all he needs, Ill take him from there. Because your trainer has worked hard at this, dedicated their life to this, broken a few bones between then and now, learned to read energy that few people are even aware of. Your trainer has learned to rely on their spidey sense. Has learned about the times you just sit real quiet and maybe pet your critters neck a little, and the times you roll some steel into his rib cage. Your trainer wants to do their very best for you and for your horse, and they are the ones risking it...so, just admit what you cant do, or arent willing to give up in order to do, and show the ones who lay it all on the line a bit of respect. Despite common belief, this isnt a job just anyone could do if they simply had the time, it takes more dedication and determination than its ever given credit. I write this today simply because it been weighing on my mind this week. The first of the month came and went, and weve had the big turn around out here that we have every month; July horses leaving and August horses coming in. This month we are swamped with some interesting cases; horses started and not finished due to training mishaps/equine misunderstandings. Heres the thing folks; horses can hurt you. They have the physical ability to crumple people like a tin can. They deserve respect, and lots of it. So if you arent a full time horse trainer (or a fearless and handy youth...because those immortal teenagers can get away with anything! ) can you please respect your horse trainer enough to call them BEFORE the Big Bang? Please?? Its no different than calling a mechanic to work on your truck. See more

We like to buy our horses young off breeders who dont just know bloodlines but how to match them to get great minds as well as cow sense and conformation, but this was going a little far, lol, as we bought this guy still in mommas belly and we havent even met him yet! I said to my friend and client Colleen Wangler of Old Baldy Ranch, Im looking for a blue roan colt, pretty head, big hip, lots of brains...can you pick me one? Do you think she knows my type? lol Richard and I are pretty excited about this one!! Lots of cow and lots of looks! #baby40horses
