The Emergency Community Support Fund has allowed us to make several investments in our community to support the most vulnerable. Community organizations will r...eceive financial support through the fund which will allow them to continue their invaluable work. Were grateful to the Government of Canada, United Way Centraide Canada, Community Foundations of Canada, and the Canadian Red Cross for this partnership to strengthen the resilience of our communities. Poverty is an #UNIGNORABLE issue that stretches across the country. Melanie had recently separated and given birth to her second child. While looking for housing she found living conditions that would not work for her and her newborn. By asking for help, Melanie was connected with Virginie, a volunteer who helped her by giving her the support she needed. To be part of the change to help raise awareness about poverty, share your local love and share Melanies story with your friends.

GenNext Saskatoon 22.08.2020

Poverty is an #UNIGNORABLE issue that impacts far too many people in our communities. Forced to make choices between food, shelter, water, heat, medications, and much more, for those living in poverty the challenges are endless.

Hi everyone, my name is Alex, and Ive been with GenNext coming on 18 months now. I work at a large processing facility just outside Saskatoon, and during the Covid-19 pandemic, Ive been one of few people that continued to work from the site. I did spend a few days working from home but for the most part its been go-go-go. The people at my site have done a fantastic job responding to the pandemic which has allowed us to keep the lights on. I have managed to keep busy du...ring downtime trying to maintain a bit of sanity. Im an avid cyclist, intermittent jogger, and connoisseur of fine audio books, racking up a few hundred km on the bike, putting my new kicks to use, and crushing out almost half a dozen books over the past few months. My amazing partner is a cribbage shark who has been taking me to school on the cribbage board, so I will likely keep my losing streak up against her as the summer rolls in. Take care, Alex

Hi! My name is Stephen, and Ive been on the GenNext council for about a year now. I work in the tech industry, and Im extremely grateful that the nature of my work has allowed me to change to working from home pretty seamlessly. While I definitely miss getting out with friends and networking, being stuck at home has given me the opportunity to do some renos. My cats have certainly enjoyed me being home all day too!

Hi, Im Callum! My career is client focused and involves lots of face-to-face meetings at the office and on the road. Moving to my home office has forced me to adapt how I run my practice and has made me a better communicator. With the extra time at home, my fianc and I have focused our attention on home improvements, specifically updating our bathroom and backyard.

Hi everyone! My name is Jenelle, and I have been a part of GenNext for a year now! I am a Speech-Language Pathologist, and I work at RUH, and the Jim Pattisons Childrens Hospital. I work with children who have feeding and swallowing disorders. I have been lucky to stay busy at the hospital helping babies and children during this crazy time ! Although at times, being on the frontline has been stressful and even felt unfair. It ultimately has been a blessing to be busy and a...ble to see the wonderful people I work with everyday! Ive felt a whirlwind of emotions throughout this pandemic, from fear to heroism, to shame, to burn out, and everything in between! The thing that has helped me stay grounded and happy is just knowing that these are all valid feelings! Ive been listening to lots of podcasts and reading books that have helped me realize this! The biggest thing Ive learned is this: In the midst of all this craziness, lets not be hard on ourselves for feeling the way we do!

Hello United Way of Saskatoon supporters and fans, my name is Fred, and man 2020 has been a wild and crazy ride so far! First and foremost, I hope this message finds you all healthy, happy, and in a good place. Since the new year of 2020 I got a new job working from home, celebrated my sons first birthday, and have been doing more Zoom calls than I care to count. Luckily, my workplace was already implementing a work from home program called Result Oriented Work Environment... or ROWE for short. It has been a blessing, because it allowed me to get a little training on how to work from home along side our young family (we have a 6,4, and 1 year old). This whole COVID19 situation has been hard on everybody. Its easy to feel down and stuck; but, as a family we have tried to adapt by being outdoors as much as possible, limiting screen time, and camping in our basement. Unfortunately, however, some have been hit harder than others. For the most vulnerable, this situation has made a bad situation even worse. For others, they may be facing for the first-time, unemployment, poverty, mental health challenges, and total isolation. As someone who loves to be involved in community, it can be overwhelming. Thats why I am involved with GenNext. Its a place for people to know more about the community, to connect, and to do some good. I just want everyone to remember we are all in this together. Though we cannot all be together at a fun GenNext Event, please stay connected with us and we promise to do the same. Check out our social media, sign up for our newsletter, and check-in on us once-in-a-while.

In my job, I travel a lot all across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Making the transition to working from home was initially quite a shock. While it was nice to be in my own home for a change, I was really missing working face-to-face with my team. As an avid reader, I decided to invest the new-found time in powering through the shelves of books I have, which I often struggled to find the time to read. I am a fan of reading books that have also become movies or shows. S...o, I decided to read the Harry Potter series. Most people in my generation read the books and watched the movies as kids and teens. I had never done either! During such an uncertain time, being swept off to the magical world of Hogwarts has been an entrancing way to fill the hours around the house. Now that the nice weather has arrived, I quite like reading in the yard under the sun with my sunscreen, of course! See more

Social Isolation is taking its toll on many of us right now, but for many people in Saskatchewan, especially seniors, this isnt a new reality. Call 2-1-1 to connect with mental health supports in your area.

GenNext Saskatoon 26.04.2020

Social isolation is an #UNIGNORABLE issue in all our communities, with 1 in 3 Canadians reporting they do not feel a sense of belonging to their community. Rose was one of those Canadians. As a kid she was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and by the time she was a teenager, most days she just wanted to sleep all day. A United Way-funded mentorship program helped her connect to people in her community and gain the confidence to complete high school and set goals for her future: she wants to be the first Indigenous female Prime Minister of Canada. Share your local love by sharing Roses story with your friends.

Hi ! My name is Crystal and Ive been with GenNext for about 3 years now! During this pandemic Ive been using my social media to connect with my friends around the globe , and to connect with my family back home, . Ive taken free classes online and supported all my favourite local businesses as much as I can. Ive also taken the time to really be with my family, my three adorable kitties . From extra cuddle time to training them to do tricks, Ive done it all! It was hard to stay motivated , so I had to be creative. I found that recording my cleaning/cooking/working out sessions on hyper-lapse mode and posting the "evidence" online for my friends to see, helps! Ive also recorded lots of funny videos in hopes of spreading laughter among others.

United Way of Saskatoon and Area is deeply committed to our values of diversity, inclusion, and equity welcoming, celebrating, and valuing the contributions o...f all. In order for our city to improve the quality of life for everyone, we need to ensure that community services are designed and delivered with everyone in mind including POC (people of colour). Systemic anti-Black racism means that our Black colleagues, partners, and neighbours do not feel safe. We understand many are feeling deep pain and anger during this time, and we stand together with them. Structural racism is deeply historical and extends to many groups, including the Black community, in our city. Its important that we work together to develop solutions that address the destructive elements of systemic racism. Our community is strongest when everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Here are some community pages to follow, engage with, and learn from on your journey to becoming anti-racist.
