When we first sat down and discussed the opportunity or working together, we discovered that Aman was caught in the vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting and over training. Tips for building a better back It’s no secret that the deadlift is the king of building thickness and density of your posterior chain. But if you have already built your foundation of strength and want to strictly focus on aesthetics you may want to re consider how you are performing the movement. Deadlifting from the ground requires much greater hip extension than a rack pull. Thus exhibits a larger risk to reward ratio which may be unnecessary for those strictly wantin...g to build a better looking back. In the first video we are demonstrating a rack pull with front band tension and a 5 second isometric hold at the top end range of motion. This requires greater engagement of your lats to keep the barbell tight to your body the entire time. Snatch grip deadlifts, although more difficult to learn will be a more sport specific way of building upper back strength and muscle density. The wider grip requires your traps, lats and rhomboids to fire isometrically. Providing a stimulation you may have not felt before. Think about it this way, I’ve never met an elite level Olympic Weightlifter with a weak looking back I wanted to end this post by saying their is absolutely nothing wrong with normal conventional deadlifts. For most people, variations of compounds movements are simply unnecessary as they have not built up the foundation of strength and movement to properly perform a more advanced version. But, if you are looking for a different way to target your upper back, give these two exercises a shot and tag us in your story for a chance to be featured!

This is a story of two completely different people. . . Growing up in Texas, Hussains body weight was pushed to the extreme as he completed his university football career. After moving to Vancouver, Hussain noticed the quality of his health worsening after the birth of his first child and accepting a promotion at work that required frequent international travel. He became depressed as his self-esteem reached an all-time low along with him tipping the scales at 350 pounds. ...As desperation kicked in, Hussain dramatically cut carbs, calories and increased cardio. Dropping a whopping 155 pounds all on his own, but at the cost of feeling lethargic and unmotivated on a daily basis due to crash dieting. . . Girls dont play sports was repeated to me over and over again. It was not until I met my husband, and moved to Canada, that I was encouraged to attend the gym. However, shortly thereafter I had back to back pregnancies, resulting in a 60 pound weight gain. The gym had taught me that I am the master of my domain. I worked hard, kept my focus, and shed the 60 pounds, all the while maintaining my job, and playing the role of mom. The gain in muscle and the visible results, encouraged me to compete. As shown in previous videos, we commonly see people rowing incorrectly. Leading with their elbow, dominating the movement with their biceps leading to anterior rotation of the shoulder, elevation of the trap and decreased activation of your rhomboids and lats. How I prefer to perform this dumbbell row variation is by breaking it down within each phase of the movement. Initiating the exercise by retracting my shoulder blade, pulling the dumbbell low to my hip against maximal b...and tension while slightly rotating my torso to increase the contraction. Holding for 2-3 seconds each rep to improve my mind to muscle connection. At the end range of motion I allow my shoulder to track forward further stretching out my lats before performing the next rep. I usually use this variation at the start of my workout because it helps me improve the quality of my pulls with different exercises later in my workout. Tracking your food and workouts helps you or your coach analyze your routine and fine tune it to work for you and your life style. .... . 1 Record your body weight and measurements. We suggest using your neck, shoulders, chest, bicep, waist and quad as landmarks and using the same scale every time. 2 Take progress photos! Its not uncommon to feel embarrassed at first, dont worry you dont have to share these with anyone. They are for your records and I can promise you that you will be happy that you did! 3 Keep a mental note or mood diary about your general sense of wellness.
