Thats Who Thursday - Meet Jose Feliciano! Feliciano was born on September 10, 1945, into a Puerto Rican family barely supported by his fathers work as a farmer. By 1950, Felicianos parents had relocated to New York City. Although blind since birth, by the age of six, Feliciano had taught himself to play the concertina simply by listening to records and practicing. Later in his career, Feliciano would master the bass, banjo, mandolin, and various keyboards. In his early tee...ns, Feliciano discovered his instrument of choice: the acoustic guitar. Again he taught himself to play simply by listening to records. By the age of 16, he was contributing to the family income by playing folk, flamenco, and pop guitar on the Greenwich Village coffeehouse circuit. At a time when his father was out of work, 17-year-old Feliciano quit school in order to perform full-time. He played his first professional showfor which he was paid by the club instead of from a hat passed through the audienceat the Retort Coffee House in Detroit in 1963. Back in New York that year, he was discovered at Gerdes Folk City. The RCA Records executive who spotted Feliciano quickly arranged a recording contract. The singers first album and single, both of which were produced in English in 1964, failed to make it onto the U.S. music charts; but the album The Voice and Guitar of Jos Feliciano did catch on with disc jockeys, who played it regularly on their radio stations. His awards include: Grammy awards for best new artist, 1968; best contemporary male pop vocal performance, 1968, for Light My Fire; and best Latin pop performance, 1983, for Me Enamore; 1986, for Lelolai; 1989, for Ceilito Lindo; and 1990, for Por Que Te Tengo Que Olvidar. Latin Music Expo Lifetime Achievement Award, 1991; numerous gold and platinum albums.

Thats Who Thursday - Meet Alan Jardine of the Beach Boys! Alan Jardine in Lima, OH, on September 3, 1942, and moved to Hawthorne, CA, when he was a young child. Al Jardine and Brian Wilson went to school together at Hawthorne High and both played on the football team. Thus, the Beach Boys were formed. (Note: it could be said that Brian and Jardine were the first two in the band.) Some biographies on the band call Al Jardine the "lost Beach Boy." After all, he was the only ...member of the band who was not a Wilson, or related to a Wilson. But it was Jardines mom who helped pay for instruments when the group recorded "Surfin" and Jardine who played bass on the track. "Surfin" went to number 75 on the Billboard Charts. Al Jardines contribution to the band was neither insignificant, nor peripheral. First of all, he sang lead on one of the bands most famous songs, the number one hit "Help Me Rhonda."Al Jardine left the Beach Boys after years of infighting, out of a disagreement with the direction the band was choosing. Alan Jardine is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Grammy in 2001 as a member of the Beach Boys. See more

Did you know....Music helps develop language and reasoning skills. The area of your brain that deals with language and reason also deals with music, actively using that part of the brain keeps your skills sharp. The left side of the brain is better developed with regular musical training when you are young.
