Captain Steve enjoyed brunch today at Captain Roberts Table at Discovery Harbour. His preferred choice is the menu item called The Captain, featuring eggs benedict with grilled trout. Therefore the Captain had The Captain at the Captain.

Thursday September 3 Notice I was just on the boat when the storm hit. In the aftermath of the worst of it, the water has risen so the Dock is underwater by about 6 inches. Therefore we will not be opening tonight. In that case, go Raptors. Captain Steve See you Friday or Saturday night.

She’s not sinking! I was recently asked how we conducted the hull inspection for the Georgian Queen which we had to do every 5 years. The procedure we followed was to literally sink the front end, or bow, of the ship by filling the first two compartments forward of the galley with water and then have two cranes lift the stern of the vessel out of the water and lay the keel on shore. Once the stern was out of the water we serviced our shafts, propellers, rudder and see valves. Does anyone have any other interesting photos of the Georgian Queen? If so, comment below!

Found this photo from the Huronia Museum website. In 1956 the Murray Stewart ( now the Georgian Queen) was towed to Midland from Toronto. Five day trip from Toronto to Port McNicoll turns into a twenty-one day adventure as these two tugs encountered bad weather. The tug Sipat under the command of Capt. C. Courtemarche of Midland left Toronto Nov 16th with the much larger tug David Richard in tow. The 130 foot David Richard, was once used to maintain navigational aids in ...the area and was called the Murray Stewart. The big tug is owned by the Waubaushene Navigation Co. and was manned by two employees, Leo Montgomery and Joe Brousseau. At one point on Lake St. Clair sixty mile per hour winds broke both tow cables. On Lake Huron more high winds caused a 12 ton winch to break loose on the David Richard. On Monday the big tug was moved to the Midland Shipyards where cranes removed equipment to make room for a new diesel engine to be installed at Waubaushene over the winter months. See more

The water level is extraordinarily high this year. Below are two photos of the Georgian Queen at the Penetanguishene Town Dock that show the contrast. The first is a photo taken in late fall 1986, the year when most high water level records for Georgian Bay were set. ( Note that there was a strong north west wind that day bringing the water level up even more so). The second photo was taken mid winter, possibly 2009 or 2010. Georgian Bay water levels are at their lowest in De...cember but still the overall levels at that time were very low. To judge the difference in height, note that the Georgian Queen’s freeboard (the height from the deck to the water line) mid ship is seven feet. Come on down to the ship to our open deck patios for a drink and listen to some tunes (Captian Steve is DJ) while taking in the view and the sunset at the Penetanguishene Town Dock. Open every Thursday Friday and Saturday from 7 to 11 pm. Cash bar and BBQ burgers and hotdogs. See more
