Georgian Roots Farms 28.04.2021

Sorry we've been quiet this week - it has been full and I always feel guilty posting when the do list is longer than my arm. The plant babies needed cooling (how was 20+ this week???), and garden beds were being prepared. Meanwhile our @georgianroots wedding prep and planning is in full swing -- as is lockdown and toddler parenting. All my daytime work calls these days start with a disclaimer: at some point my baby is going to try and talk to you on the phone, and my dog will... probably bark, my apologies. The to-do list is still longer than the done list for this week, and it's Sunday night -- so I'll just have to roll it over to Monday morning. BUT I'm excited to show you tomorrow where all the plants are at, and what we're sowing this week. Flowers like these pictured here from last year's garden aren't too far away now. Feverfew, royal white sweet pea, anemones, ranunculus and a blush cosmo. There's good green growth on the way!

Petit eucalyptus trees just sitting waiting wishing for those warmer days. We've been experimenting with eucalyptus growing methods this year, because last year was a flop. One of the things I'm finding is that they're kind of like gold fish -- the bigger the bowl, the bigger the fish. But in this case, the bigger the pot, the bigger the eucalyptus grows.

Tiny greenhouse tour going up on our stories later today. It was -4 C last night with what felt like gale force winds. I was relieved when it was still standing this morning and that all the plants were okay. Did I sleep well? No... are we considering moving the baby video monitor to our tiny greenhouse to ease my plant mom worries? Yes, yes we are. The next few days of forecasted weather are going to be rough, with lows of -7 C, so we're getting our little plants and outdoor growing spaces prepared today.

Sunday morning on the farm: barn chores, get the dahlias sprouting, remove frost cloth from the ranunculus low tunnel, water the seedlings, sow the statice, asters, tweedia, and remaining foxglove, move the hibiscus off the germinating station, check the larkspur in the cold room, wash trays, thin the snapdragons, pot up the sweet peas, move the scabiosa outside to grow on cold. Then make lunch and start the afternoon to do list. ... But it's raining today, and even though the work load doesn't change, there is always something about a rainy weekend morning that just calls out for going slower, savouring hot coffee, baking something, and listening to mellow music. So that'll probably happen too. What does your rainy Sunday look like?

One of my absolute favourite flowers is White Cloud larkspur. It has a similar look and use to baby's breath, but is more airy with long, elegantly branching lines. It's star burst shaped blossoms dance above dark green stems, reminding me of a flock of birds in flight. Right now the 2021 crop are just happy tiny plants, but in 70ish days they should be about ready to bloom. I can hardly wait.

Today we're trying to think happy thoughts and hope for the best, and we've got two things on our checklist to do that: 1) dig up dahlia tubers, and 2) work on holiday prep. Petite bouquets of everbloom florals like strawflower, statice, feathertop, and hydrangea have been paired up with seasonal greenery and gone to @kelsis.kreations for 2020 Holiday Boxes that will be available soon @_belledecor ! Shopping local + small business + holiday season = all around feel go...od See more

Most of the flower field's rows are cut down and getting prepped for winter, but we left a few rows that had plants that survived the frost, including the dahlias. -- This year we grew dahlias from seed to experiment with getting new types. About 1 in every 50 plants actually gave us something good, and really only 1 in 100 gave us something spectacular. -- This popped out of nowhere yesterday, and it's one of those that made the cut to save the tubers for next year. In a couple years, if it’s a proven performer, we'll give this dahlia a name, but I already have one in mind in honour of our dear friend who's birthday it also happens to be today! @jill.marie.24

The flower field crunched under my boots this morning, our first heavy frost meant the last of the zinnias and much of the remaining flower beds. -- Bittersweet moment looking at the sparkly field, but mostly, just feeling thankful for such a good year (not without it's challenges though!). -- So, the very last of our fresh flowers are avaliable at the farm stand today until 2pm! ... -- There are also some golden queen tomatoes and a few bags of potatoes left!
