Georgian Bay SUP

Useless information alert! Gull island lived up to its name yesterday as many of these birds were in full force as I rounded the island on a grey Easter Monday afternoon. And, yep, it reminded me that there is no such thing as what we typically call a sea gull. Seriously...nowhere will you find a species with the name seagull. That's because there is no such species. Because many species of gulls can be found in coastal areas near the ocean, humans have used the term seag...ull as a collective moniker for these white, shrill-crying birds:.. I actually like gulls. They are a super species for ecosystem recycling and one of the few that can drink both fresh and salt water - not to mention having developed a complex repertoire of vocal communications. Hi everyone. Just thought I’d send it out there that we have put ourselves on hiatus as a stand up paddle board retailer to the Georgian Bay area. This isn’t due to Covid, but more about what started as a stoke for seeing SUP in this area having been achieved. We were a lonely lot back in 2012 with relatively few people out on the waters around Georgian Bay. We’re proud to have been blazing our own trail and sharing way too many laughs along the way. I can’t say we’re gone forever or won’t reinvent ourselves in some other capacity but a chapter has definitely come to an end. Many thanks to everyone who supported our philosophy of Getting Boards to the People - Learners to Legends. Stay well and respect the water...

From the extreme crisis that is the burning of the Amazon to watching people at my local supermarket buy cases of water in plastic bottles and haul their groceries away in plastic bags, I struggle to stay positive, to stay hopeful. As I paddled into an easterly headwind I ponder my own sense of self - the ebb and flow of my mood and who I think I am and the people I want in my life and those who don't want to be. I think about the changes I am trying to make - to be a m...ore conscientious consumer; to connect with my community more; to just be better than myself but change can be difficult and like my moods, it ebbs and flows. But ultimately, it is inevitable. All we need to do is just keep leaning in the right direction. Today I paddled around Green Island for change. The water is still so warm and I am grateful that I have the freedom to be out on this beautiful Sunday morning. I lean into the wind and my thoughts shift to hoping that each of us keeps leaning in the right direction. PLEASE READ This morning I paddled around Christian Island for change. I chose to do this to launch an opportunity for people to use paddling as a vehicle to grow their commitment as freshwater stewards. For me, I have hung my hat on protecting the freshwater here in Ontario and want to build awareness about the threat that climate change, pollution, evasive species, and sulfide mining are having on the Great Lakes. So, with a let’s stand in the last remaining light atti...tude, here’s what I’m suggesting - get out and paddle around something (big or small) and post your pic with #ipaddledaroundforchange By doing so you will add your voice as a freshwater steward and commit to making more responsible consumer and lifestyle choices as well as getting involved in local grassroots movements. I know it may be a small token but change always starts with a step or a stroke in the right direction.
