EDIT: Updated April 22, here's the details for those FREE records! https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk//n/digital-downloads/ Keep your eye on The National Archives social media feeds. They are working on offering free access to their digitized collections. If you have ancestors from or in the UK, this is an excellent resource. Their website makes searching their digital collections easy, but many things were behind a pay wall. Great news! https://m.facebook.com//photos/a.47942/10158155824879640/
Paper theatres such as the pieces from one shown here was a wholesome recreational pastime appealing to both adults and children. It was most popular in the early-to-mid 19th century, becoming less popular after 1900. Toy theatres were only affordable to middle-and-upper class children, as they retailed for a penny for uncolored sets and characters, and two-pence colored. The characters and scenes are from a melodramatic play entitled The Miller and His Men, a play written b...y Isaac Pocock(1782 1835) and performed at Covent Garden in 1813. This particular toy theater version is said to have originated with the Mossington family of Jackson's Point and may date to the late 1820s. It was donated to the GPV&A in 1974. There are many printable versions and instructions to making your own toy theatre, online. Below is a link to one available from the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Below that is a link to a performance of the final act of The Miller and His Men. These can be made as simply or complex as you like. Perhaps you can create a future family heirloom and tradition. Enjoy! http://www.vam.ac.uk//articles/m/make-your-own-toy-theatre/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_FPOGgxa70

A CONTEMPTIBLE TRICK Played Upon a Party of Lady Campers by a Gang of Rowdies, Special to the Mail. Keswick, Ont., Aug. 31.- Last night after ten o'clock a party of men visited Ferguson's Point, Lake Simcoe, where there are several camping parties, and committed mean depredations. Mrs. T. Botsford has a marquee on the Point in what is known as "Rachel's Dell." She and her friends, about twelve in number, had been away at Snake Island during the day on a fishing excursion. Th...ey returned about nine o'clock, and as the weather was threatening they left the tent and took up their quarters in an old deserted house on the extreme end of the Point. During the night a boat load of men was seen to land at the point, and shortly afterwards it was found that the ropes of Mrs. Botsford's tent had been cut, the canvas slashed, the cooking utensils destroyed, and everything wrecked. The men also visited the house, where they tied the door, and then dared the inmates to come out and tackle them. This morning the matter was reported to the authorities at Keswick, and it is likely that several arrests will result. Toronto Daily Mail 02 September 1882; page 4
