ANNOUNCEMENT - POSTPONEMENT OF SALUTE TO ALL ESSENTIAL WORKERS Following the announcement of the provincial stay-at-home order, the board of directors met immed...iately to discuss the safety aspects of the salute, which was scheduled for this Saturday (April 10). For the health and safety of our pilots, volunteers and the general public, we have decided to postpone our event until Saturday, May 15, 2021. While we remain confident that the ‘salute’ is a safe event for all involved, it would be a disservice to the essential workers that we are honouring if we were to proceed with the event during a stay-at-home order. We are at a critical moment of the pandemic. There is a record number of ICU cases across the province and cases continue to rise. In postponing this event until after the end of the stay-at-home order we are not only encouraging everyone to remain safe, but also supporting the efforts of all our essential workers. This was not an easy decision to make, especially knowing how much our communities have had to endure since the beginning of this pandemic. While the Salute is a safe and inspiring event that we could have done, the Board looked at the more difficult question as to whether we should have the event. We have chosen to stand with our workers, to promote safe practices while working to put on an outstanding event on the 15th of May once the lock down is lifted The following acts are still confirmed to take part on May 15th: - Banner Pull (will be towing a banner behind with a special message to essential workers) Flight Line Charters - RCAF CC-130H Hercules - Harvards Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association - de Havilland Vampire - Waterloo Warbirds - Aero L-29 "Viper" Delfin Jet - Waterloo Warbirds - Mixed personal aircraft COPA St. Thomas - Boeing-Stearman Dave Hewitt - Beechcraft Model 18, Canadian Queen Expeditor Dave Hewitt - Robinson R44 and Bell JetRanger Helicopters Zimmer Air We will have more announcements over the next month as we continue to build on this community event. Over the past two weeks, we have asked residents to nominate their favourite essential worker for a chance to win a free ride in a Harvard aircraft, or tickets to the upcoming St. Thomas Air Fest in June 2022. We are pleased to announce the winners of this contest: Winners of Free Ride in a Harvard (rides to happen at a later date): Charlene Blaney - Primary Care Paramedic Vaccinator Erin lee Gardner - Grocery Store Clerk Mike Lawrence Personal Support Worker Winner of Family Pass to Air Fest 2022: Adam Scharrer Personal Support Worker Winners of 2 General Admission tickets to Air Fest 2022: Courtney McQuiggan - Crisis Repsonder Craig Hudson Security Guard Stacey Langohr - Personal Support Worker Jason Pollard - Tractor Mechanic and Volunteer Firefighter A very special THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to send in their nominations. Each of those nominated are a real example of selfless service to our community. We also want to thank the pilots and the crews of the aircraft, along with our sponsors who continue to offer their support. We all look forward to looking up into the skies above St. Thomas on the 15th of May to watch a truly unique collection of aircraft and their SALUTE TO ALL ESSENTIAL WORKERS!

(DND Archives Photo PL130186) Flying Officer Marian Neilly, an RCAF para rescue nursing sister shown here in May 1955 at RCAF Station Trenton, Ontario. She was... a parabelle, a term coined for para-rescue nurses from the 1950s in the Canadian Forces. She took part in operations in what would later become modern day search and rescue (SAR) in Canada. She participated in Operation Pikes Peak at Lowry Airforce Base, Denver Colorado, on 24 March 1955. The Joint USAF/RCAF exercise aided the two services rescue units in adopting a system whereby both can participate in rescue missions in either country. The para-rescue course offered in the 1950s was attended by nurses and doctors, who at the time were the only medical personnel to jump out of airplanes on rescue missions and they did so on a voluntary basis. The course was the foundation of, and at that time the only equivalent to, todays vigorous and demanding SAR technician training course. Nursing Officers continue to serve in the present day Canadian Armed Forces Medical Service, many having deployed on tours of duty overseas in the Gulf War, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, Somalia and Afghanistan. "Would you do it again?, asked the young girl. The Veteran kindly replied, Yes, for you. Well feature that true story later this week. But Its a conversa...tion that could have happened between any young person and any one of our WWII Veteransand its a reminder for our world today. We are living in turbulent times. The examples of our WWII Veterans are an opportunity for every citizenno matter where you are on the opinion scaleto press a reset button. Our children are watching, and theyre depending on us. 2020 was supposed to be the Victory Year, the year celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the defeat of totalitarianism and the end of WWII. It still can be the Victory Year. And, if we have anything to say about, it will be! While our WWII soldiers felt a strong sense of personal loyalty to each other, first-hand accounts show that their true motivation came from a strong moral connection to their mission. They viewed their cause as just. Their belief that they were fighting to preserve freedom and liberty for all sustained them through the darkest days of the warand through experiences that many of us cant imagine them freely willing to repeat. Its easy to look back on history with a certain pious 20/20 hindsight. The bad streak in humanity is enormous. The great news is that the good steak in humanity is even bigger! And, IT WINS EVERY TIME! Weve made it far, havent we? The stories of our WWII Veterans are an epic example of how when right is pitted against wrong, right eventually has the upper hand. We owe it to our WWII Veterans, and all Veterans, to pursue these turbulent times with wisdomwisdom backed by courage, character, vision, restraint, humility, love, and respect for the dignity of every human being. Those are among the values our Greatest Generation pursued time win the war. The gift our Veterans have passed on to us is not a world free of challenge or discord. The gift theyve passed on is a world where we are free to use the best in the human spirit to create a continually brighter future. Nothings stopping us but our own vision of where we want to end up, a humanity united or humanity broken in pieces. Were lucky to have the followers that we do here on our page. Your comments and feedback are always inspiring. Whatever your opinions during these times, the stories of our Veterans encourage us all to act nobly. If we want this to be the Victory Year, acting nobly is a great place to start. Our children ARE watching. And, they deserve our leadership. We hope you agree. Heres looking forward to a great Victory Celebration. All The Way!
