Enjoying this throwback to last year when we could gather in person for Diwali. Things look a little different this year but we’re celebrating together in spirit. This message below was shared on our small business owner group chat ... This Diwali is different. It is about being: -Grateful that we are still able to breathe and alive for this day; -Thankful for the love and care from our loved ones; -Spending time together with the family under one roof; -Spreading cheer to family and friends; -Extending support to those who have suffered losses in jobs and businesses.. This Diwali is more about being helpful & hopeful, for a healthy & happy tomorrow. *Happy Diwali* #shoplocal #locallove #supportsmallbusiness #eastendtoronto #littleindiatoronto #leslieville #gerrardindiabazaar #YYZ #Toronto #happydiwali

Sending out warm wishes and gratitude to all who were able to join us virtually in celebration this past week. We were not able to gather on Gerrard East for the TD Festival of South Asia, as we have done for the past 18 years. However we truly appreciate every one who has maintained connections with our community and continued to support our small business owners during this challenging time. Thank you to the many shop owners, artists, and production team for making it possible to bring the festival online this year. We are so grateful for your time and efforts, and couldn’t have done this without you. If you missed out and want to catch up on 7 days of amazing stories, workshops, live performances and so much more. Hello Friends, My art show NO IDEA - Paintings from the Pandemic opens today at Gerrard Art Space, 1475 Gerrard St E., and runs until September 27th. Gallery H...ours are Wednesday to Sunday, 2pm to 7pm. This weekend, in lieu of a traditional reception we will be having three open houses in order to spread out the numbers: Friday the 11th, Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th, all from 2pm to 7pm. I will be hanging around the gallery on all three days, so feel free to come by and take a take a look and have a visit. I would love to see your face, even if only the upper half of it. Social distancing is of course in effect. We will be limiting the number of people allowed in the gallery at a time. Masks are required. Here is an excerpt from the show statement: Right before the everything shut down back in March, I was lucky to be able to get to the art store to pick up a roll of canvas. I had just been laid off from building sets for film and television and was staring down the barrel of who knew how much time off. I needed something to do with my time. How much time? No idea. So, I stapled a piece of the canvas to the wall of my studio and got to work. Each layer of paint shrank as it dried, pulling against the staples holding it to the wall, making wrinkles and ridges. Successive layers only served to accentuate those marks, deepening them, making them a permanent part of the work, a memory of its genesis. That was the beginning of the first piece that I painted for this show. Incredibly, its now been six months. These 28 pieces are the result of that time. All of them have been painted, re-painted or, in the case of the Mixed Wood Mashups, assembled during this pandemic. They are then a record of what I have been thinking about consciously or unconsciously during this unprecedented time. So, what do these pieces have to say about where we are or where we are going? No idea. Which is kind of the point. Working without an idea is exactly the way I like to paint. I like to try and remove my self and my conscious thoughts from the process and just work intuitively responding to what the work presents, helping it become what it is wants to be. I find that my best work happens when I can get out of my own way. When I am working at my best, no idea is exactly the idea that I am going for: to paint something without painting it on purpose. Whether or not we understand the times we are living in; whether we have any idea about when they will end or what life will look like afterward, we cant escape being marked by them on our bodies and our minds. Here then are the marks these times have left on me. For more, come on down. Or, if you cant make it, I will be posting a video walkthrough of the show in the next day or two. Much love, Matt For a complete preview of still images from the show go to: https://www.mattgwood.com/no-idea
COVID came along and changed all of our plans for 2020, but we continue to adapt and rise to the challenges that we face in this unprecedented time, together. We cant gather this year on Gerrard India Bazaar in person, but we can still bring the spirit of the festival online, and support local business. Stay tuned for more updates about our upcoming virtual event! ... bit.ly/fbFSA2020 http://festivalofsouthasia.ca/

We are just in love with these beautiful mandalas. These sidewalk decals can be experienced as a kaleidoscope of bright patterns and colours in 4 variations, with over 100 decals installed across the Bazaar. Roshni was the natural choice for this project. We had the opportunity to witness her at work, when she stepped up to participate in a volunteer community painting project last year. Her vibrant work can be spotted on a planter-boxes along Gerrard Street East. ... The spiritual meaning of mandalas, which symbolize constant change, multiple reflections, and beauty are evoked through this activation. We couldnt be happier with the way this installation turned out. We are so grateful to @rosenafung for creating such a fun and engaging piece to convert our temporarily vacant windows into literal works of art This whimsical and exuberant collage, spotlights our dynamic, and colourful neighbourhood and celebrates our diverse South Asian history and culture.... The piece includes an homage to the Naaz Theatre, where it all started: a small theatre showcasing Bollywood films that eventually led to the proliferation of local businesses, and ultimately the BIA we see today. This activation offers a warm welcome to a neighbourhood bursting with life and a vibrant local economy. Here you will find music, films, dancing, specialty grocers, wares, spiritual items, books, art, fashion, and some of the best South Asian cuisine in the city. Gerrard India Bazaar BIA is hoping to partner with a local creative group capable of design + production of an interactive public art installation, which can highlight the South Asian roots of our East End community. We have one concept in mind that involves large South Asian food sculptures, but we are also open to entertaining innovative ideas from creative trailblazers. Please reach out to our office with details about your work style and experience if you are interested... in working together. [email protected] Know someone you think would be the perfect fit? Please shoot us an intro. Our inspiration: In short... South Asian Food! We are inspired by generations of chefs, grocers, and entrepreneurs who are preserving Indias living culinary history. Hospitality and Tourism has been one of the hardest hit industries during the global pandemic, yet is also a major atttraction for visitors in our BIA. A unique and attention grabbing approach could be the creation of large scale food sculptures for our temporary CafeTO parkettes. Or even public seating and tables shaped like South Asian foods. ie samosas, paan, curry dishes, chai, kulfi, naan, mangos ect An additional consideration could be 3d Lettering to pair with the sculptures. #shoplocal #locallove #supportsmallbusiness #eastendtoronto #littleindiatoronto #leslieville #gerrardindiabazaar #YYZ #Toronto #keepmakingart #TOArtsTogether #publicart #indianfood #sculpture #ArtworxTO #placemaking #citybuilding #installationart #canadianartists #artistsofinstagram #design #illustration #wayfinding #creativedesigns #arttoronto #artcanada #explorecanada #canadahelps
