Today is #GreenShirtDay where we are encouraged to register our wish to become organ donors. As many of you may recall, the Humboldt Broncos bus crash occurred on April 6, 2018 killing 16 people and injuring 13 others. Bernadine and Toby Boulet, parents of Logan Boulet, offered to donate his organs and tissues so that lives could be saved. They did this because Logan had registered as an organ donor and had spoken to his parents about his wishes. Logan was able to donate his ...organs and tissues so that six lives could live on. As news spread of the organ donation by this young hockey player, almost 150,000 Canadians registered to become organ donors in the days and weeks that followed. To date, this is the largest number of Canadians registering to become organ donors in Canadian history due to one event one person. This upswing in registrations inspired Green Shirt Day, which launched in 2019. The day honours, remembers and recognizes all of the victims and families of that fatal crash. It recognizes Logan and carries on his legacy to inspire more Canadians to register as organ and tissue donors. By ensuring people know what a simple act and conversation with family can do, to create healthy lives for others, Logan brought us hope from tragedy. I tried the Chicken Lollipops - in house spice coated frenched chicken winglets, deep fried and finished in a wok with crispy onions and peppers. Last week I finally donated blood for the first time! It's something I had always thought about doing but never took the steps to actually do it. Canadian Blood Services was looking for help to reach more donors this holiday season - when they reached out to see if I could help get the word out, I volunteered to donate while also sharing my experience on here. Lets face it, running a start up business requires a lot of hard work and energy. To keep going, I try to put my health first with regular exercise, yoga/meditation, drinking lots of water and eating balanced meals. Even with all these good habits, Im not always feeling optimal. Today I attended Round 1 of the first every BZB Test Kitchen Iron Chef Competition! Sergio Zevallos of Hogsmith North America vs. Maurice Boire of Chefs Temper. Great food, wine and entertainment that was unfortunately cut a bit short due to rain but overall it was a fantastic culinary experience. Amuse Bouche... Oyster Poboy Bao Bun, Gochujang Aioli and Kimchi Pickled Daikon paired with Crew Gewurztraminer L.E.N.S. Appetizer Lemongrass Pappardelle, Bacon Lardons, Egg yolk paired with Dancing Swallows 2013 Acute Angle Riesling L.E.N.S. Showdown Black Box items included Cornish hen, fennel seed and oats! Part of the challenge was to pair the meal with the mystery beverage chosen by chef and sommelier Eugene Di Rocco of 519 Food & Wine. Who will be the first-ever BZB T.K. Iron Chef champion?
