According to global health data, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness. There are therapies and medications that help manage anxiety, but did you know what you eat also plays an important role in anxiety management? Here are the top three foods you can add to your diet that may help with your anxiety! 1. Probiotics & Fermented Foods: About 95% of serotonin receptors are found in the lining of the gut. Probiotics & fermented foods are made up of good bacteria... that increase the health of your microbiome and digestive system (which includes the lining of the gut). Common fermented foods include: yogurt, kimchi, kombucha, kefir, tempeh and sauerkraut. 2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Research in this area is still fairly new, but reviews indicate that omega-3s help reduce symptoms of anxiety. Are you getting enough omega-3s fatty acids? Check out my recent Wednesday Wisdom on omega 3s! 3. Antioxidants: Research shows that anxiety could be correlated with a low antioxidant intake. Therefore, increasing antioxidant intake may help with symptoms of anxiety. Try adding foods like beans, fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables & spices such as turmeric, ginger, oregano, mint & cinnamon. like if you agree! Just like any other type of self-care, eating well makes us feel good, gives us more energy and improves our mental wellbeing. One of the best things you can do is nourish your body rather than restrict it by dieting. When did a diet ever actually make you happy? Or promote well-being? Or make you less stressed? Dieting, cleansing, restricting, and detoxing leads to giving up, feelings of guilt, and more stress. Good nutrition and self care means prope...rly fueling and actually feeding your body the basic things it needs to function: high-quality protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates. The thought of ditching a diet is scary, but it also doesn’t mean throwing everything you know about eating well aside either. Here are my tips on nutrition for self care: - Get colourful when choosing food - Don’t be afraid of fat (specifically omega-3s) - Unplug, slow down & enjoy your food - Eat when you’re hungry What are your favourite types of self care? Here are my top three strategies for supporting your gut health and consequently your mental health! 1. Know which foods can contribute to a healthy gut and which can potentially cause problems.Try replacing highly processed, high-sugar, and high-fat foods with high fibre foods and foods high in omega-3 fatty acids. 2. Add probiotics & prebiotic-rich foods to your diet. Both support your gut health and aid digestion by building and maintaining a healthy bacteria and other m...icroorganisms. 3.Focus on good digestion.Stay hydrated and practice mindful eating by taking time to experience your food (chew your food properly, relax while eating, limit distracted eating). Know someone who needs to hear this? Tag them in the comments!

The topics are chosen based on suggestions from you so let me know if there's anything you would like to learn! This week's topic is vitamin D! I get asked a lot about vitamin D, mostly because it's known to be linked to Seasonal Affective Disorder (a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern). BUT! To date, clinical studies examining w...hether vitamin D supplementation helps people with SAD have demonstrated mixed results. So, it may or may not help. Despite this, adequate vitamin D intake is still important. Swipe through to see all about vitamin D and why you should talk to your doctor or dietitian about a supplement!
