PRESS RELEASE December 14, 2020 Contact: Kayla Andrade, Ontario Landlords Watch, 226-972-0563... For Immediate Release Eviction Ban is Not a Plan The purpose for this peaceful event is to bring awareness to Premier Doug Ford and Provincial Members of Parliament, of the negative impact an eviction ban will have on landlords, and to encourage the Province to properly address the root causes that impact a tenant’s inability to pay rent. Who: Kayla Andrade, Ontario Landlords Watch and participating Landlords/Advocates Where: Local MPP Office for Landlords in each participating Municipality When: Friday, December 18, 2020, between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm Ontario Landlords Watch serves residential landlords and property managers, by connecting members with a vast network of resources. For over 10 years, we have been advocating for better solutions and liaising with the government to encourage them to help good landlords, help good tenants. Landlords need to be recognized as a business and a resource that can help to quickly build up the rental stock. Barriers and red tape hinder progress, while effective policies that protect both landlord and tenant, in fairness, are badly needed. The economic crisis of covid-19 is loss of income, not eviction. What is needed isincome for both landlords and tenants. A ban does not relieve tenants of their obligation to pay rent and only pushes the issue ahead a few months. On December 8, 2020, Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government allowed the adoption of a non-binding Opposition motion asking that a moratorium on evictions be reinstated. However, the legislature adjourned two days ahead of schedule for a two-month break, stopping debate on the motion. NDP MPP Suze Morrison put forward the private member’s motion calling for an immediate ban on residential evictions that would hold until the province enters a post-pandemic recovery period. Morrison is now calling on Ford to issue an emergency order to shut down the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) again, amid the second wave of covid-19 cases. Eviction bans signal lenders that rental units are risky business. Lenders are skeptical and can request repayment of loans and mortgages resulting in foreclosures. Our Provincial leaders are sacrificing rentals with their long history of failing policies and processes, leading to a decline of these much-needed rentals in the housing market. Eviction bans are short term solutions, that turns the housing crisis into chaos. Provincial relief and economic recovery will address the lost income and where we need to work together towards better solutions instead of punitive measures. There will be unintended consequences with a downward spiral of available and affordable rental units. Landlords are caught in the middle, being housing providers who face lost revenue and pressure from lenders, through no fault of their own. It is poor political decision making that negatively impacts landlords in the process of trying to help tenants. Landlords should not be used as collateral damage because of the government’s long-standing mismanagement of the housing market. An eviction ban is not a viable strategy or end game to reduce the number of people in need of affordable housing. Christopher A. Sarlo, Fraser Institute, Causes of Poverty (2019): Ironically, it is government programs (welfare, in particular) that are intended to help the poor but end up actually enabling poverty.
