"When I made the move to Ottawa for my undergrad, I was ready to dive into the exciting world of politics one might expect from Canada’s government HQ. In my fi...rst summer in the city, I did a short internship with the Canadian Society for International Health. Those two months were pivotal, leading to a full-time job in non-profit programming and communications, subsequent opportunities to volunteer and network with various global health organizations, and sparking a deep commitment to health equity I take with me beyond the workplace. This year I started my MA with a focus on health and humanitarian policy and am currently involved in a research project assessing the impact of gender norms on access to health services in fragile contexts. I often say that I stumbled upon global health by accident. Looking back now, I see my entry into global health as a natural progression in the causes that had me excited about politics in the first place. A saying that I’ve long prescribed to is the personal is the political. This call-to-action, which has its roots in the feminist movement, is fundamentally about centring community experience. By starting small, we lay the groundwork for challenging the broader systemic issues and dynamics shaping the world we live in. The more I navigate the global health space and witness fellow SYPs push back against the power imbalances that underpin development, the more I’m convinced that the personal and political are part and parcel of global health too. My story is not a unique one. It’s energizing to hear from peers on their diverse career paths into global health. My message to anyone finding their way through the sector (as I am!) is to embrace the unfamiliar. Confront your biases and try to get even a basic understanding of professional and research niches unique to your own. An eagerness to learn will get you far, and your global health experience will be more rewarding for it!" - Priscilla Pangan MA Candidate, Norman Paterson School of International Affairs #celebrateghleaders

"Community-building is one of the many reasons why I love global health. The field brings people from across the worldwho speak different languages, come from ...different cultures, undergo different experiences, and work in different sectorsto collaborate and learn from one another. Rather than perpetuating the existing gaps between us, global health serves as a bridge that connects us. As a student and young professional, I’ve learned three key lessons which I’d like to share: 1. Be Open to Learn Seek out opportunities to learn about the numerous topics that intersect in global health. For instance, I’m grateful to have attended conferences (e.g., Global Health Students and Young Professionals Summit, Canadian Conference on Global Health, International Conference on Public Policy) where I was able to dive deeper into subject areas that I’ve been passionate about, including health equity and community engagement. 2. Global Health Can Be Anywhere In addition to working abroad, there are numerous community-based initiatives you can be involved with. Discover your passions and allow them to inform where you work and in what type of work you engage. For example, at The Institute for Youth Health and Development, I’ve had the privilege of learning from racialized and newcomer youth in Toronto. With the youth leading the way, they developed a participatory action research project exploring issues relevant to their communities such as self-esteem and body image. 3. Always Critically Reflect Critical reflection is essential and must be an ongoing process. Ask yourself questions, such as who needs to be at the decision-making table and are they there? and what should my role be in this setting? Understanding your power and privileges can allow you to determine when it is appropriate to lean in or out. I hope these three lessons can help facilitate my fellow colleagues' personal and professional development as they did for me." - Hunster Yang M.D. Candidate, University of Toronto #celebrateghleaders

"A great deal of what I know about global health, and indeed the advice that I provide to students and young professionals that are interested in this field com...es from one of the most pivotal experiences of my global health career to date: Being a part of the CCGHR - Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research. For the last 6 years, I have been involved in this dynamic community and have had the privilege to not only be exposed to countless ways of thinking about enhancing equity-informed global health, but the incredible researchers and practitioners actually moving the needle in this space. This experience has provided me with MANY realizations and a-ha moments, but perhaps none as compelling as the importance of engaging in critical reflection. The Coalition is such a special community because it is a group that is constantly interrogating what doing global health work really means, and the importance of considering your own intentions for getting involved in this field. Being involved in the Coalition has taught me so much about the importance of thinking very carefully about what you are putting under the microscope (a metaphor Coalition member Stephanie Nixon uses to describe how the problem is being framed) and how this framing may unintentionally reinforce inequities. Learning to constantly self-reflect and check in with my own motivations for being involved in global health work has been critical for my personal and professional growth, and is something I try to pass along down the mentorship cascade that I am fortunate enough to be apart of in my work with the Coalition." - Emily Kocsis #celebrateGHleaders

"I have always known that I wanted to build a career in healthcare. Five years ago, I embarked on a journey to make that happen, and it started with moving half...-way across the world, from Bangladesh to Canada, to pursue an undergraduate degree in Physiology & Neuroscience. I was excited about the prospect of a new future, but I was also scared I did not come across anyone who looked like myself in a leadership role in the Canadian healthcare system. I started to doubt myself does a visible minority, a woman, and an immigrant really have the potential to contribute to our healthcare system in a meaningful way? Fortunately, I wasn’t completely discouraged by this lack of representation. Instead, I made it my mission to change that. Currently, I am a board member of Options for Sexual Health, the Executive Director of a grassroots non-profit organization called Free Periods Canada, as well as one of the founding committee members of Women in Global Health Canada. As an emerging leader in healthcare, I take immense pride in the work that I do, because with each passing day, I know that I am one step closer to making the Canadian healthcare system equitable in both access and representation." - Zeba Khan #celebrateghleaders
