Physical therapy for dogs? Really?? Yes, really! Cats will also benefit (if they tolerate it!) Dogs undergo many different orthopedic surgeries, neurologic surgeries or can have musculoskeletal injuries or neurologic conditions that respond very well to physical therapy. In the veterinary world, we call dog physio, rehabilitation or rehab for short. Rehabilitation in the recovery phase of cruciate ligament surgery (TPLO, TTA or extra capsular suture for example), medial pa...tellar lunation surgery, back or neck surgery (intervertebral disk disease surgery), femoral head and neck excision, elbow or shoulder arthroscopy are strongly recommended and it can dramatically improve outcome for dogs. Rehabilitation can be used as a non-surgical tool to manage conditions such as hip dysplasia, shoulder instability and muscular injuries such as iliopsoas (or hip flexor) injuries. Very active performance dogs (agility, flyball, hunting dogs), just like human athletes, are susceptible to repetitive strain injuries. Many of these can be managed with rehabilitation, once a diagnosis is attained. Weight loss is also a benefit of rehabilitation in the veterinary world. Many rehabilitation facilities focus on both recovery from surgery, injury and have started weight loss programs for both dogs and cats! Weight loss=preventative medicine! If you have questions about where to go for rehabilitation for your pet, Dr. Swayne will be happy to help you find an appropriate facility! http://www.dailymail.co.uk//Fat-cat-no-Hefty-feline-named- See more

Congratulations to the Class of 2016 ACVS diplomates! I had the pleasure of working with two of these wonderful surgeons at the VEC when they were interns. Congrats Dr. Jessica Knapp and Dr. Lindsey Kurach! Well deserved, you should be proud! https://www.acvs.org/node/1599
